This is one of my favorite genres, actually; I play a ton of FIFA, Super Mega Baseball, Rocket League...

Where would CE classify games like Skate and Steep? Those are sports games in a sense, no? or are they treated differently?

Stuff like Madden and FIFA are boring to me and so are the simulation stuff like nba2k18. However the Mario Sports games and stuff like NBA Jam are pretty good. Stuff like that isn't made all that much anymore though.

I sucked at sports as a kid, and it being made into a videogame didn't make me any better at them.

I get that they would be entertaining for ppl whod like to play a sport and just dont have the people or decent weather for it, but other than that theyre just awful

I think the only sports game I've ever really enjoyed was mario strikers and I bet purists would say that doesn't even count. So gotta go with a low rating here.

They often felt to me like they sacrifice gameplay for realism, references to real people/teams/etc, accurately representing the actual sport, and so on. Which I'm sure is great for people who are into the sports irl but it's just not the kind of thing I'm looking for in my games at all

edit: I guess I liked some of the older tony hawk games too

Really depends.

If it's arcadey, it can be fun depending on how well it's made (see: NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, Neo Turf Masters).

But if it isn't arcadey, then it can go fuck itself.

Difficult to say, as I'm not really sure what you would consider a sports game.

I currently play Out of the Park Baseball 19 more than any other game, but it's a management sim, not a standard sports game.

I also love some games previously mentioned like Rocket League, Skate, etc. Where would those fall?

Rocket League is definitely a sports game. Skate... I think counts? But extreme sports like that feel different from football, soccer, etc.

i gave it a 4/10

a lot of sports games can be fun, but the way 90% of games are designed these days is utterly disgusting (the latest NBA 2k game I played felt like a smartphone game) & innovation feels stalled

I can appreciate a sports game for its tech, innovation, presentation, and in the case of older titles, as charming time capsules. However, the mere thought of playing a sports game (football, hockey, baseball, basketball, etc) sucks the living joy out of me, and I can't imagine myself being entertained even if I was playing with or against a friend.

overall i don't care about most sports as an adult. however some sports game have oddly fun gameplay like mario tennis series, techmo football, some of the madden 00s football games i played, hot shot golf games, NBA snes game, ps1 boxing game called Contenders, and a ps1 soccer game i used to play a lot as a kid.

so i won't go out of my way to buy a full prices sports game, but if its F2P or really cheap, i will give it a shot.

Not really my cup of tea but the few times I've played them I've had crazy amounts of fun just screwing around. There's no better genre for it.

These was this basketball game for PS1 where the character creator had no summational thing for the stats so you could set everything to max if you wanted, then you could set every player on the team to that one guy. You could furthermore turn fouls on and off individually. So naturally I spent the whole weekend scoring like 130 to 0 against the CPUs with my team of 9 foot tall sunglass-clad clones that could make a full-court shot with like 70% accuracy chasing down and murdering whoever had the ball then crossing the court in about 1.5 seconds for a slam dunk. It was a thing of beauty.

There was another time I downloaded the demo for an American football game and I just kept jumping offsides before they could snap the ball. Sometimes I would pretend I wasn't going to and then dive at the last second, or sometimes I'd do it immediately, or sometimes I'd run all over the place, back and forth, whatever and eventually jump offsides. My roommate at the time was in tears from laughing. I don't know why it was so funny to him, lol.

I guess the appeal of screwing around in a sports game as opposed to other genres is because all the NPC's are actually expecting a particular behavior.

Really in-depth simulation style adaptations of team games rival the deepest strategy games for tactics and planning and setting up your formations and player selections etc.

And the arcade style adaptations like NBA Jam or Punch Out are just a hell of a lot of fun.

I play a lot of real life sport, though, so experiences may vary for others!

And yeah, I would classify extreme sports differently.

Those old Tony Hawk games were so dang good. I landed an 11 million point combo offline in Proving Ground once.
