Because minors are offered a different level of due process than adults, and the kids are kept so they can get a full hearing as per their legal right but parents who apply for expedited ruling get sent back early. Legally, we HAVE to keep them even if they parents plead guilty to be sent back early, because otherwise we'd be violating a minor's legal rights. Congress is even drafting a law to explicitly override this legal situation to put illegal alien families in the same holding centers even though you don't normally house minors and adults in the same place.

they arent all mexicans. not every immigrant is from mexico. they enter FROM mexico, but many of them originate from South America and then travel through Mexico to reach america

I have no idea, but the issue of these kids is ultimately one of a legal system that separates minors and adults and has different procedural protections and timelines for each. Without changing the law, doing things differently can only be achieved by asking our legal system to just ignore legal code and do whatever they want.
