Yes, it was awful. Changes to the characters and Tameem being a dick to people who reacted negatively didn't help at all. Especially when Donte looks suspiciously like Tameem.

what I hear is the original DmC was a competent action game with horrendous dressing with its story elements and the general publicity behind the game, and while the gameplay was competent it still completely fucked up on some basic stuff people expect from DMC

Definitive Edition is apparently actually good gameplay wise but the story elements are still as ahborrent

DmC was a fucking abomination and has shit gameplay. don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I've only played the original DMC, but to my understanding people can work with the over the top and borderline wacky "cool" of DMC3 and DMC4, while the super serious losing itself in the edge "cool" of DMC2 and DmC just doesn't on any level

It plays like a worse God of War. That's not what people are looking for in the series. It's overall just a mediocre game but it was an insulting direction for the series to go in.
