Two things here:

Why not secure the damn thing if it's so valuable?

Why did the parents let their kid run off and pull a statue down?

This. And it was in the main entry to a venue hosting several events where kids would be expected. Was there not so much as a rope around it? If this goes to court, hopefully the family countersues.

Yeah, I'm not blaming the parents on this one. Assuming she's not outright lying, that statue was in the main walkway during a wedding reception.

And when I saw the price tag, I assumed it was going to be a full statue. How the hell is a 100k+ bust just sitting around a hallway in a "local community center?"

The statue doesn't look like it's broken in pieces. It still exists.

Sounds like they're trying to charge them the full value of the statue. Just glue the pieces back together and charge them the cost of the work, plus a little penalty if it can't be repaired well. Otherwise I think they're being asked to pay way more than the actual damage that was caused.

I mean, if I drive my car through a garage door and cause damage to someone's house, I'm liable for damages because I damaged the house

But I shouldn't be on the hook for the entire value of the house! It makes no sense if the house is still standing!

You're legally liable if your dog bites someone. Same with the kid, they're under your supervision so you're on the hook if they do things like that.

I still think it's exaggerated to ask them to pay the full value of the statue, and I hope the amount is challenged in court.

insurance companies love to have hands out for money, but when a problem arise they don't want to hold their end of the deal to payout insurance costs. it's the big middle finger to the consumer.

They should sue the community center. I was all ready to come here to complain about bad ass kids. But that was just the middle of everything it didn't have rope about it. It would be different it was in museum or something but it was in community center where they new families would be.

There's a difference between a museum and a hallway in a community centers that can be reserved for parties.

CE often seems to think that you're meant to keep kids chained to you at all times.

The real objection is the price, not the fact the kid was wrong and the parents should be held liable.

I mean, if someone crashes into your Ford Fiesta they are responsible for damages, not buying you a new lambo. Shit otherwise I could draw some scribbles on a piece of paper and put a price tag of $6million and wait for someone to spill coffee on it, then bankrupt the family for the next 7 generations.

LOL I guess some of you weren't very well-behaved kids! I wouldn't have dared touched a piece of art as a 5 year old. I was able to understand how to play soccer, so controlling my hands and not touching everything, much less pushing it over?

Plus if the kid is five, where are his parents? What sort of parents let a kid, well-behaved or not, out of their supervision at age 5? That's terrible and the parents ARE liable for that reason.

SUPER FAIR. NEXT

There was that 12-year old kid a few years back in Taipei, he was near a painting and wasn't watching where he was walking, he stumbled into a little platform they had in front of it to keep people from getting too close (oh, wicked irony), put his hand out to catch himself...and punched right through it. It was like a $1.5 million dollar painting and the only one of that artist's works that he had signed.
