Bowser was replaced by a human villain in the Super Mario Bros. movie and Bowser appeared in Wreck-It Ralph without Mario. When ~~t-rex koopa's being turned into goo~~, he briefly becomes a CGI dino hybrid which I'm sure was an early test model for Koopa's on-screen character. Dennis Hopper is simultaneously the best and worst thing about that movie.
