Board 8 > Important Yakuza question, HELP DESPERATELY NEEDED

I'm in the middle of Yakuza 0, and it is hot, glorious sex, and I am loving the hell out of it.

I planned on playing Kiwami next... then I saw Kiwami 2 is on the way in August. My original plan was to play Kiwami, youtube plot summaries of 2-5, then play 6. Is 2 important enough that I should wait to play it before jumping into 6 to really get the full extent of the plot/character development and such?

Kiwami 2 is so close that you might as well wait and experience that story for yourself. FWIW it's still IMO the best story Yakuza has ever had. (With 0 very, very close behind.)

Only thing I might mention is that 6 might feel like a slight downgrade mechanically after Kiwami 2 since they apparently tune up the new systems a good amount there. Other than that though in your situation it should be a pretty good way to go.

0's story is amazing, so MAN that'd be crazy if 2 is better.

Everytime the game switches stories I'm like "maaaaan, I want to continue this", but within 10 or 15 minutes I'm back to being 100% invested in the other story.

Well, I guess here's the other question, how much game time is in Kiwami?

I'm in Chapter 9 of Yakuza 0, it has taken me like 3 weeks to get that far. So if I finish Yakuza 0 by end of the month, how long would you expect Kiwami to take me to get through? If I have to wait less than 3 weeks, thats not too bad. I just have a feeling once I finish Kiwami, I'm gonna have an itch to keep going.

Yeah 0 is completely crazy. It instantly rocketed into my top 3 all time games and was the deciding factor in Yakuza bumping off MGS as my favorite series. Glad you're enjoying it so much!

As for Kiwami's length, it depends a lot on how much side stuff you do (as I'm sure you've realized by now with 0,) but overall it's a much shorter game. Like, maybe around half as long, give or take a bit?

BLAH, I imagine I'll have to wait a month or more then.

But you know, maybe thats a good thing. A small break. Mario Tennis and Octopath come out in June, and I think a few other things. I'm sure I'll be able to keep myself busy.

I like Kiryu more as a character but that's a statement dripping with bias from all the other games, haha. Keep in mind even before 0 I'd played 5 games with Kiryu and he was already vying for the spot of my favorite video game protagonist.

I definitely think Majima has the better plot but they're both incredible in very different ways. Kiryu gets all the awesome interactions with Dojima's lieutenants and some other stuff I won't spoil but this really feels like the Majima story. Kiryu's rocking that path of manhood but that's kind of what he always does - Majima goes through some really heavy stuff in this game and it shapes who he is for the rest of the series.

Interesting.

I'm actually more into Kiryu's overall. They've done a better job of establishing the family hierarchy with Kiryu, and his relationships with his friends and mentors are very interesting as well. A couple of the main mysteries are really cool. And his faceoffs with the family top dogs have been intense. Since I haven't played the other games, the path of manhood isn't stale in anyway for me.

Majima has had lots of interesting stuff too, I think Kiryu is just way more likeable. But also not having super clear villains till about halfway through hurt the plot in spots imo.

In terms of gameplay, Kiryu's side of town is bigger and more fun to explore. But now that both the "business" things have come out for both of them, Goro's is clearly way more interesting and fun. So that is a big edge to him. But like I said, I'm always disappointed when characters change, but it doesn't take long to be super invested again.

Also, I'm not seeing American release dates for Yakuza 3-5, so I'm probably just going to go to 6 after Kiwami 2. That might kill my desire to play those games, but oh well!

Where are you seeing this? I see Japanese release date for 3 and that is it.
