I'm getting tired of this being constantly shoved in my face. Like, OK, you're so progressive to have a gay couple. I still don't care. I watched the first season of 13 reasons why with my gal, and there was this scene where (can't remember exactly) where someone calls out that chick for making a big deal of being gay. And they're like "it's 2018. You're gay. Nobody cares."

And I laughed my fucking ass off.

It's objectively not constantly shoved in your face. You are objectively wrong.

As for the rest of your post, it doesn't have anything to do with PS4 board having a meltdown over gay Ellie. I would even agree that there are definitely people like what you describe in this country. But this is not the topic to discuss that issue at all.

Ellie isn't gay in the name of some social justice fight to be won. She's gay because of character development, story telling, and thematic exploration that artists wanted to personally delve into.

I feel like "pandering" is just a buzzword some people are using to fake justify their reasons to hate the game, or worst to justify their homophobia. It's definitely for confirmation bias reasons. Can't hate it bluntly for your main reasons so you'll reach where you can to throw the fire. If you guys are fully convinced the game is pandering and it's a deal breaker then it is time to move on.

That's literally what it feels like at times, especially nowadays.

Like the accusations of "pandering" when games like Prototype 2 had a Black protagonist or when Liam in Mass Effect Andromeda was black. We knew nothing about their story or how much their race would impact the story, yet the fact t they were black made folks accuse the game of Pandering.

Same with what folks said about the Last of us 2 trailer wasnt even bashing heterosexuals or doing some shoehorned pro-feminist statement. Yet two girls kissing suddenly is going SJW.

Ultimately, everyone wants to be pandered to. How else are you supposed to garner an audience for a game unless you pander to one. Folks are getting upset when they feel like they're no longer the core the core audience the game is supposed to pander to.
