Well when the first game was coming out, the main appeal was survival horror and that turned out to be false. It was actually action horror but then you actually literally fought more humans than infected so that was a complete turn off for me. The plot was unoriginal with the theme of "Humans are the real monsters".

The new E3 trailer showed no sign of any infected or monsters. It was all humans doing humans things. You would have thought this game wasn't a zombie game at all. It's a bait and switch game and I think it's horrible for doing that.

I've always been in this camp. It's never deterred me from getting a game, and I appreciate what they're trying to do with this stuff, but it always leaves me cringing to varying degrees.

Whenever I replay FFX and get to that scene you're talking about I go find something else to do for 15 minutes because unskippable cutscenes ftl

It was kind of weird how ND was trying to sell its game on "LOOK AT US WE GOT LESBIANS!" and public sniffing is the grossest thing ever, but I kind of liked the juxaposition and I think grown Eli is cute.

Stuff like this is a big part of the reason why I never associated with "gamers" in real life. I'm a huge nerd, but I can't deal with the racist sexist homophobic basement dwelling socially awkward types. Only thing that stinks is that I've never had people to play games with dedicatedly, other than shit like Madden/Halo etc.

I just find romance in video games to be awkward to watch sometimes. The sex scene in Mass Effect and some scenes from The Witcher series come to mind. If Ellie was kissing a man in The Last of Us Part II, I still would have found it awkward. Im definitely still buying the game day one.

The sheer amount of sex between the characters that were displayed in cutscenes. It was a lot.

Yeah. But that was a standard established since the first game in the series and was, as I've heard, actually toned down in W3. Romance subplots and occasionally suggested or displayed sex are staples of wrpgs.

Less so than in survival horror and third person shooting games. I didn't play the dlc, but the first TLoU also didn't have any focus on romantic displays. But that is probably because it was more about a surrogate father-daughter dynamic instead.

Regardless, while I think the dancing/kissing scene went on a bit too long, that's more because I would've preferred to see more of the gameplay. But I know ND likes their cinematic stuff these days.

So, you're saying that because TLoU (part 1) didn't have the particular human interaction of romance in it, that it is no longer allowed to do that in any future games in the sequels?

Pump the breaks there, Cathy Newman. I didn't say anything like that.

What I am saying is Witcher 3 and TLoU2 are different games and different game genre that have different expectations. The Witcher games, and books if I've heard right, being heavy on sex was established early on in the first game, so no one is in any position to complain about bait and switch or a change in focus or whatever.

That is, of course, setting aside the fact that the Witcher games have gotten a log of flak for their depictions of casual sex with numerous women.

I'm trying to explain to you why people didn't get bent out of shape over the Witcher 3 having a lot of sex in it. That is an expectation of Witcher games that was established from the beginning and the source material. It is also an expectation for wrpgs in general to include some romance elements in general. Again, setting aside the fact that the Witcher games did get a lot of flak for the sex scenes.

Some people might not appreciate what they think of as a change in direction or focus for TLoU, since the trailer spent such a long time focusing on the lesbian romance scene over the post-apocalyptic, survival horror elements. Didn't even show the infected, for example. Romance also isn't generally a big focus in survival horror games that I can think of, so people geared toward that genre may think of lesbian romance as an unnecessary distraction from the meat of the game. When people have certain expectations or desires for a game, they can be resistant to changes.

Not to mention people who just don't want to play as a lesbian woman, because reasons. Or people who cynically think of it as virtue signaling and pandering to a niche audience.

Explaining reasons why a new aspect of a game is getting pushback isn't the same as supporting the pushback. Granted, Ellie being a lesbian isn't anything new and people complaining about it now are late to the party.
