Your entire argument can be compared to cable TV basically. Enjoy your bronze package internet subscription that doesn't include the Premium Youtube Add On for only $4.99 extra per month!

This won't happen. The support for Net Neutrality will go from 83% or whatever to 99.9% and Net Neutrality will be brought back right away.

What I meant was, nothing is stopping ISPs from increasing monthly rates for internet service right now.

Too bad it doesnt work like that numbnuts

Its also incredibly asinine to think all of this is going to happen the day its repealed. Itll probably be months to a year before the real effects are felt

Again, it's not going to be some overnight change. Think of the boiling frog metaphor. They'll be shady and change whatever they can slowly over time and if they happen to get caught there would be no legal repercussions, and people living in monopoly areas would have no other options to switch to if they don't agree with it.

It's going to be awful! People who are willing to pay more will have access to better service! People who don't want to pay as much will have more options! Consumer choice is a TERRIBLE thing! Why should Internet service be like... literally everything else?

We're not getting more options. We're having options taken away from us and then sold back to us piecemeal.

Like you know that old meme about how a game in the 90s was a burger and a game in 2010 is a bun and the burger is DLC and the lettuce is another DLC and the condiments are microtransactions?

That's literally what's happening without Net Neutrality. Calling that fucking shit more options is disgusting at its core.

If California and other states pass Net Neutrality on their own, and if ISPs want to slowly ruin the internet, it will eventually be noticeably better in those states and people will recognize this.

It's great that California has their own Net Neutrality, because we can now see what difference Net Neutrality actually makes.

Mods, can we please go back to whrn posting blatant lies was considered trolling? There has never been "before net neutrality". Nn has been the default since before the internet was even available to the public. Anyone who uses that phrase is being intentionally dishonest, and it's only purpose is to derail the actual conversation.

That is absolutely not the fucking case. Anyone old enough to remember dial up services like AOL, Prodigy, CompuServe, etc will fucking tell you there were massive differences in what you were allowed to access.

Wrong.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_neutrality_in_the_United_States

In 2005, under Republican Chair Kathleen Abernathy, the Federal Communications Commission adopted network neutrality principles "to preserve and promote the vibrant and open character of the Internet as the telecommunications marketplace enters the broadband age."

Maybe the idea of net neutrality has always existed, but it wasn't official policy until then.

Adelphia, iirc. actual internet. 90% sure AOL in the early 90s didn't connect to the web, only usenet. that's not censoring or throttling, that's just not offering a service.

edit: also, sorry about spotty responses; now at work.

By 95 all providers were on the internet. The first ones started connecting at 94. The thing is there actually wasn't much worth visiting in 94.

But that's besides the point.

Back then there were literal entire MMOs that you could only play if you had a specific provider. Some website content was restricted, but they were inconsequential when they were restricted. What's not inconsequential is the fact that they were able to restrict them at all.

For example: this is from 2014

But that's not the only fucked thing they've done.

Employees at ookla's speedtest have talked about how ISPs deliberately boost traffic bandwidth for their website so when you complain about your fucking shit being slow the ISPs support tell you to go there and are all "LOOKS FINE TO ME"

Ookla tries to combat this by doing things like fucking with their IP addresses but it's a losing Battle.

the first point is irrelevant. that's not net neutrality. that's not being able to play your Sony exclusive game on your Switch. the second point is valid, but only if it's true.

Yes we can clearly trust large corporations, who have monopolies in large areas of the country, whose only real goal is profit motive to not fuck over consumers.

Yet somehow that didn't happen PRIOR to "net neutrality."
