Lost_All_Senses 06/08/18 3:36:28 PM #11:	I accepted/decided that Id rather be an asshole that's dead inside rather than an anxious nice guy that's intimidated by everything. Not to say Ive eliminated anxiety but I definitely cut down on it by having the mindstate that Im 28 now and Im stuck eith who I am at this point so accept it or not >_>. MacadamianNut3 06/08/18 3:46:41 PM #12:	Grad school changed me The mental health concerns that come across as memes from students trying to avoid adulthood while living in a safe academic womb are no joke. Not everybody experiences it, but just like any job you may have to deal with asshole bosses (I didn't) while worrying about how long you will be at that job (funding, satisfying your PI, external stuff resulting from you almost putting your life on pause) and for the unfortunate ones you're likely taking a huge hit to your wallet (doesn't apply to me). In the meantime you're also devoting all of your effort into publishing something novel and it's very easy to attach yourself to your work (why go to grad school otherwise) and think of your work as a reflection of yourself and your self-worth, putting it all there out in the open with a good possibility of some rando reviewer or professor tearing it apart and tearing you down. This is the main reason why I sympathize with someone like Phil Fish. This teardown possibly happening multiple times over multiple years with you constantly learning more and more about just how much you don't actually know. I never had much of an ego myself and I didn't have anywhere close to the nightmare stories you usually hear on places like /r/gradschool, but I am way more pessimistic than I was 8 years ago, like a completely different person.
