But when it comes to laying you off/firing you you get a notice maybe an hour in advance.

No wonder there's no more job loyalty.

Telling someone 2 weeks before you fire them is just asking for trouble tbqh. Like, I get what you're saying but from a practicality standpoint it would lead to a lot of theft and other issues

My wife put in her notice and the owner literally did a "you can't quit, you're fired!" A few years ago.

But on the other hand, you could tell your employer you intend to leave after 2 weeks and they (or your coworkers) could go out of their way to make your last 2 weeks miserable out of spite.

That is very dangerous and a good way for your employer to get sued.

Perhaps, but let's say you decide to leave a retail job after 2 weeks. Suddenly they decide to start giving you the crappier shifts. Or perhaps your manager who used to be polite and friendly to you suddenly starts acting like an asshole. Not much you can do about that.

I mean, sure, but that creates the issue of now you can't have that job on your resume, which would suck for a job you worked for a decent amount of time.

Do you think a company who goes out of their way to make the last two weeks of one of their employees work days crap is going to be a good option to put on your resume ANYWAY?

side note, you can still put them on your resume.

employees are only allowed to say things like "i would hire them again" or "I wouldn't hire them again" these days anyway.

Yep. Especially if that job was at-will. Works both ways.

Yes?

If it's a reputable/prestigious company, or if the candidate in question has very little work experience.

That's assuming you could actually prove that was the case, in court. In an "at will" state, you can be fired for anything or nothing, meaning the only way an employer could ever realistically get in trouble for violating labor laws, would be if they were caught actually admitting that were the true reason.

again...
If your company is reputable and/or prestigious than why would they make your last two weeks crap in the first place? and if they did so, do you think they are only going to have good things to say if you put them on the resume?

This is of course ignoring the fact that employers can only legally give generic responses about prior employees these days anyway.
