It's quickly becoming public knowledge that Denis Villeneuve is amazing, and he's set to direct the new Dune movies.

After Dune goes mainstream, there's going to be at least one headline that's like:

"It's Star Wars meets A Game Of Thrones"

To be fair, it kind of is.

And if you're trying to sell the movie to people who've never read the books or seen any of the previous adaptations, and have to give them some frame of reference for what the story actually IS, it's not a terrible description. If nothing else, then they have a starting point you can elaborate from.

Now, if someone were to claim that it was ripping off Star Wars or Game of Thrones, then yes, those people should be set on fire and thrown off a cliff.

The first book is really interesting but the series falls apart for me after that, it's an important work but I don't feel like it needs to be adapted again.

The only book of his I actually enjoyed was The White Plague.

Dune never really spoke to me on any level at any point.

I do. The first movie was GOOD but it really took a hacksaw to the book.

Also if it is like you describe and they wanted to adapt it proper, seems like it would be smarter to produce a high budget series rather than a 2-3 hour film

The first time I saw Dune I thought that they were talking about two drug lords and their families fighting over who gets to sell and/or distribute drugs (spice) throughout the galaxy to those with the money to buy it. I've seen both the movie version and the miniseries Dune and it still makes me think of two drug lords and their families fighting over who gets to sell and/or distribute drugs to whoever will buy them.

Spice is useful for many reasons but most importantly spice is necessary for space travel.

Spice is necessary to uphold the universal empire. If you control the spice, you can bring the empire to its knees.

They already did that.

So all we need to do is throw cinnamon in an engine to travel intergalactically?

No it is necessary because spice gives the navigators the power to see the folds of space

The novel predates Star Wars, so if anything Lucas ripped-off Dune.

Nah, Lucas ripped off Flash Gordon and samurai films.

But it's not really a question of who ripped off who, as much as picking something superficially similar for comparison to help people who know nothing about the setting/franchise to latch on to.

Dune and Star Wars are basically both set in space, with space ships and pseudo-magical powers. Beyond that they tend to diverge, but that alone is enough to give people a feel for what to expect.

the first book is amazing, I've read it at least 3 times. what I love about it is the real sense of moving to another (barely) habitable planet, and really living there learning to cope with its fundamentally different ecology (in this case, absurdly different, moving from an ocean planet to a desert planet.) even a whole profession "planetologist" for someone who specializes in studying the ecology of a particular planet.

I guess saying it, that's actually not that unique sounding, maybe even cliche, (fish out of water?), but the way its done seems pretty unique to me. it feels very believable.

the mystical stuff is all kind of weird and not necessarily that amazing, but the sci-fi parts sure are.

there's stuff I like about the second book, which sort of ties up a lot of the loose ends of the first book, though it sure has a different feel to it.

the third book I found boring and it didn't really do anything interesting at all. kept waiting for it to intrigue me, but it was just boring. when it finally should have gotten interesting, it just got weird instead.
