Platinum is fantastic and the Gen II remakes are magnificent.

Although time has been kind to Gen 3. At least the Pokemon designs.

Many areas are large and empty though, and the scrillinscrolling system for the screen created tons of issues. Like getting into the void zone the moment you get a bike.

I like Crystal the most but it is deeply flawed, I also have a weak spot for XY because of how the game is intentionally wasted potential

RSE or DPPt are probably the best objectively, I would say RSE is more focused in general while DPPt feels a bit more cluttered but DPPt is also when they solidified the core mechanics

RBY is alright but the core mechanics are broken being the first

BW and SM blow chunks but B2W2 and USUM are okay games that do some cool stuff but are held back by being based on shit, especially USUM as it wasn't given the time B2W2 had

I honestly have to go for 4 (having played all but gen 5), even if HG/SS aren't included in that. It has a good combination of features (Physical/Special split, Abilities, Natures, online features, etc.), Pokemon/moves (with plenty of each to choose from) and post-game stuff (like the Battle Frontier).

The gens before lack too many features, Pokemon and moves for my liking, while very few other games have a good post-game (Emerald, HG/SS and probably B2/W2 from what I've heard are the exceptions).

I loved gens 1 and 2 back in the day and have many fond memories of them, but going back to them nowadays, they leave a lot to be desired. My only reasons for playing them now are the (good) glitches and relative open-endedness (mostly in gen 1).

What makes gen 7 so much better than 6?

I did like some of the things gen 7 did (the Ride Pager and Island Challenge), but overall, it wasn't that big a departure IMO.

4 and 5 were the best gens, IMO. Sinnoh's my overall favorite region, but Unova was pretty good and was also the last region to really do its own thing with its own pokemon, which I respect, plus it has Ghetsis. It definitely deserves to get dinged for the starters though.
Gen 6 was kind of weak overall, IMO, but it had by far the best online mechanic in the PSS.

Johto has a lot of early back-tracking, and in actual Gen 2 it takes a while to get the bike, so that aspect sucks. Plus, most of the caves don't have trainers in them. Once you get to Goldenrod, it does improve a lot though.
Hoenn does have a lot of water routes. It's made a lot worse by the fact that they're all concentrated after Lilycove, so you do ALL of the water routes back-to-back-to-back(and that's just the required ones!).

I agree 100% with this. While D/P and B/W had their flaws, Platinum and B2/W2 are (in my opinion) the best and most complete experiences I've had with a main series Pokemon game. Those two, along with HG/SS (but TC didn't include remakes in the poll), make gen 4 and 5 the pinnacle of the main series Pokemon games.

I go for Pryce and the rocket arc after Morty. The Pokemon really don't raise in level much at all regardless of what path you go. But stronger wild things to catch and abuse till the end of the game if you aren't just solo speed running it.

the only problem with Hoenn's sea routes is how empty the post-Lilycove ones are and constant random encounters, but the open nature of them and general surf speed means they go by in the blink of an eye compared to its land routes anyways and you can always use repels

ORAS actually spruces things up with more Dive sections, actual underwater trainers, and nooks and crannies to find throughout the endgame maps, while also giving you more ways to just get by it ASAP like Sharpedo surfing and auto-repel, and is one of the two main reasons I actually like playing it over RSE

The fact that the path splits like that after you finish up in Ecruteak and both routes are perfectly viable is one thing that I feel like the Johto games don't get enough credit for. You can either go left to Cianwood and Olivine to take on Chuck and Jasmine OR right to Mahogany to take on Pryce and the Rockets, and neither route is too tough or too easy if done first. In fact, both sides have their benefits depending on your situation and your current team configuration.

If you want the convenience of the Fly HM earlier on, go left. If you think your team doesn't match up well against Jasmine and want to level up before you take on her massive Steelix, go right. If you want to check out the Johto Safari Zone for a new team member, go left. If you want to catch the Red Gyarados to use as an HM slave or to counter Chuck's Poliwrath, go right. If you want the Drain Punch and Charge Beam TM's sooner, go left. If you want the Sludge Bomb and Shadow Claw TM's sooner, go right.

It's a brilliant and underrated feature about the Johto games. I don't think any other Pokemon game in the main series has had a route split quite like this. Sure, you can do a couple of things out of order in some of the early games, like skip a gym leader and come back later, but nothing quite like this.

A lot of the progression in Hoenn fucked you over depending on your bike. Which was stupid. You shouldn't have to switch bikes to explore different routes. Glad they never brought back that awful mechanic.

Not to mention that one route with super tall grass that you can't bike through.

Between that and all the water routes, it's like the game is purposely trying to get you to go through the world more slowly.
