Any good hotel stories yet?

I had one couple that reserved 2 rooms with a debit card. When they arrived and I checked them in, they never told me they wanted to pay cash, so since the rooms were reserved with a card I simply checked them in with that. I asked her to verify if that was the payment method she wanted to use, and she went off. Turns out she had emptied the bank account explicitly so we couldn't charge that card, and was shocked that I still had the option to do so. She started threatening me and saying she'd have my job if I made her go overdrawn.

It was a simple fix, even if I used that card she wouldn't have been charged until they checked out the next day. I just went back and changed the payment method to cash, but then she refused to pay cash for either room because she was adamant that I had already charged her debit card. It took nearly 40 minutes of me and her husband talking her down until she finally decided to pay. I had like 15 people in line behind her after that. While she was throwing a tantrum, the other people were griping about me messing things up and causing the fuss, but once she was gone they all started complaining about her instead. It was a mess and I'm certain they filed a complaint against me.

Wait, why did a couple have two rooms? Do you charge a flat rate per room, or is there a per-person charge?

I think per-person charges are a little bit bullshit, but taking an extra room seems a bit suspicious, they could've had three or four unpaid people there.

Nah, it's not shady or anything. The cash option does suck though, so much extra work just to get paid and deposit it in the safe with a paper trail I can use for the audit.

It's a flat rate per room, and they had a separate room for their adult children they were traveling with. That was also a problem for her, she wanted the rooms to be joined together, but we don't have rooms like that. Plus their rooms weren't side by side like she wanted.

It's ok, I wasn't worried about the job, just frustrated that I had so many unhappy people to deal with after they finally get settled. It was a rough night. Especially over something I fixed right away, and was basically her own fault to begin with. Like, if you're so concerned about being overdrawn, why would you empty the account you were using to book rooms with? I don't understand at all.

I've had at least two people try to get me fired at one of my previous jobs. Don't beat yourself up over perceived shortcomings when dealing with such customers.

I'm so glad I no longer work jobs for which I communicate with customers. I think that might be a good fit for you, Koga: jobs that don't require you to deal much with people (especially customers). Perhaps warehousing or factory work.

Speaking from experience in a similar job, Koga, you will be amazed at the lengths to which people will go to get a free or discounted room. (Seriously. Every time somebody claims to have seen bedbugs, take a drink.)
