it's called crating the animal and is highly recommended by pet trainers and veterinarians

I can't believe that anyone would ever suggest leaving your dog with separation anxiety in a tiny cage for a minimum of 7 hours a day is a good idea

You need to get someone to come into your home to give her walks or keep her quick company while you're gone

puppy phase is brutal. Especially when you're working and she's alone.

Get a bigger crate too.

But it's recommended by the people who sell these portable prison cells! You have to be an idiot to think that locking an intelligent creature in a cage for 1/3 of the day is cruel!

Fucking absurd. If the only way you can have a dog is if you cage it up for half of it's day, well then you just shouldn't have a dog.

Crating is fine for a maximum of 4 hours. You need a relative or friend to let her out if no one else will be home.

Ideally, puppies need to be scheduled strictly and consistently.

You feed her in the morning, then you may crate for 2 hours if you need to leave but make her come out and pee. Repeat for afternoon and night.

Can't stick to a schedule? You'll have issues.

She's just bored and you need to fix that time gap. 7 hours regularly, sitting in their filth too, is bad. Crating is not. Be more consistent too.

You do know about separation anxiety, that is humans fault for domesticating dogs to pets. Dogs can do major damage to walls and doors, something to think about before you get a dog. A little dog isn't going to do much damage.

I slowly conditioned my dog to enjoy the crate

Now I just keep the gate open, and he'll walk in. When I leave for work he doesn't need to use it, but it's open for him to use whenever he wants.

It's cool because many times now I'll come home and see him sleeping in it

You want to make the crate a part of your home, not so much isolate it as something that can be a deterrent for your pup.

Crate training is common training, but not when you leave your pup for 5+ hours in there while you're gone, and you've quickly introduced a dog do it without warming them up to it!

Fair. I mean our vet straight up told us to crate our dog overnight and thats far longer than 5 hours, we dont because weve never needed to but there seems to be a lot of mixed advice out there tbh

I agree. Lots of mixed advice. I'm totally fine with crate training. I think people just go into crate training not really knowing too much about it yet.

Overnight when it should be asleep is relatively okay. But yes, no longer than 4 or 5 hours ideally. Potty training needs about 1 to 2 hour intervals after scheduled meals.

Vets sometimes suggest timing meals too. They get like 45 minutes to eat and drink then it gets put away. They'll only miss a meal once.

My carpet agrees smh, when I first got my German Shepherd I attempted crating her and came home at lunch to see she had pulled back the base and dug through the carpet and padding lol. Never crated her again after that she just free roams around my house, much better for her too as she is anxious and over-vigilant as GSD's tend to be.

Honestly it's like you think most pet owners don't have jobs or something.

I would like to leave my dogs out, but as I mentioned earlier, they have destroyed furniture when given the opportunity in the past.

Also, we have 3 cats, and the puppy likes to chase them around. We can obviously keep her away from them while we are home, but a simple gate does not contain her. She needs to be crated.

Currently between jobs but I worked full time up until a few months ago, and will be starting again in a few weeks. I live with other family, but when they were also working I went back home on my lunch break to go for a walk with the dog.

If you can't take the time out of your busy schedule to take care of your pets, maybe you should reevaluate your life.
