My grandmother used to lay there all day just watching whatever came on CBS. It seemed very depressing, but I tried to spend as much time with her as I could before she passed, and her kids and grandkids would often call or also spend time with her.

Imagine having no kids or grandkids...

No Im gonna have a sugar baby. Shes gonna be Asian, and smart, and only in it to pay for medical school.

Once shes all done, settled into her job, and ready to find herself a real partner, we part ways and I find myself another smoking hot Asian babe. And the cycle continues.

i imagine in 50 years social media will be advanced to the point that you can have companionship any time.

Or better yet there will be a brain augmentation that eliminates the feeling of loneliness

At 99 years old? She was mentally active, had no major health issues, didn't need a cane or wheelchair or walker, but she still barely left the house and never without one of us. At that age I think you just don't feel up to doing certain things.

Which would be lonlier in your old age: not having kids, or having kids that never visit or call?

Because really most kids seem to fall into that category.

I've never needed many people in my life. If I do start feeling lonely, there are many ways to interact with people that don't require children.

I don't intend on reaching the point that I can't do anything anyway. Maybe luck will favor me and I'll be like George Carlin, sharp as a tack up until the end. But assuming that isn't the case, I don't plan on withering away.

My mom knew an old lady who had three daughters.

When the lady was around 80, she was still healthy and lived a quiet life at home while her daughters were pursuing their careers in different cities.

The problem, however, was that the lady's house was very valuable.

The daughters wanted to sell it for the money. So they agreed to say that the mother was going crazy and losing her memory and couldn't live at home anymore. They lied about her starting a fire in the kitchen (she didn't). They went to court with a doctor as a witness (who was actually the boyfriend of one of the daughters) who testified that the mother had deep dementia.

The lady told the judge that it's not true, and the judge asked her if she had her own expert witness to come forward to testify. She didn't. The judge ordered her to be put in curatorship, which in Quebec law basically means that you have the legal status of a child and your curator has the right to make all the decisions for you and has the administration of all your property. One of the daughters was named curator. She promptly put her mom in the cheapest retirement home she could find and sold the house.

The mom was kept medicated in the retirement home and basically slept all day. She died soon after.

Exactly at age 25, I was pretty lonely and sad. Around that time, I then took action and start meeting many people and making connections. I imagine it wouldn't be as easy as an 85 year old.

Lol if you think your grandkids will. Usually when you're that far removed from activities of daily living it's either a caregiver or living in a group home. At least culturally in the U.S.. Some more collectivist cultures might have parents who live in home with them, but honestly there usually comes a cut off where they can't spend the dedicated time all day caring for them and they go to a group home as well.

Having kids will not guarantee being taken care of during end of life.

Lol then you're having kids for the wrong reasons

You don't need blood relatives to change your adult diapers. If your condition is really that bad, you'll find a caregiver or go to an elderly community or something

Well in general terms I'm the oldest of 4. None have plans on leaving the area. They all live with my mom anyway and their all adults. My mom is only 20 years older than me so chances are high I'll have her around most of my life too. So I should always have family around me to visit and talk to. Go out with have holidays with etc. I'm not worried about ever not having that.

As for living alone. I've lived alone since I was 26. I love it. Been doing it for a decade now. I have my cat, my home and my hobbies. Being lonely is not a problem I have and I don't see it being one 30-40 years from now either.

My entire premise is that having kids theoretically would provide more companionship and concern than reaching old age alone and losing your mental and physical faculties. Having kids would therefore be an action to engage in around this time of your life.

Cataracts are not guaranteed. It also is not guaranteed that you even live to be that old. And there are always retirement homes. And having children is not giving you any guarantee that they will care for you till your death and will not send you in said retirement home anyway. Now approximate all the investments you have to make financially and emotionally to raise child/ren.
I pick possibility of cataracts any day

That's why I said theoretical. To me, it seems better to have the potential of progeny spending time with you and caring about you than not having progeny at all.
