In part I, he was introduced as the son of the Leaf's chief medical nin who could never succeed in the chunin exams.

Now in part II he says he never knew his family and wandered between villages as an outcast until Orochimaru took him in. wtf is this shit?

The reason he didn't suceed in the exams was because he was a spy for Orochimaru wating for someone with a strong blood line limit to participate. I'm pretty sure his backstory was made up. You don't learn his actual backstory until way late, near the end of the series.

Actually I'm pretty sure it was Kakashi who recognizes him as the son of the chief medical nin. He clearly had ties with the leaf village prior to the series starting.

Im pretty sure he was given a fake background because he was a mole for like 4 different people.

Which was a huge part of his character arc

He was always being someone else that he didnt have his own persona which is why he tried to become orochimaru

Yeah, maybe he was planted as the son of a high ranking officer in Orochimaru's plan. Like I said, his backstory is revealed later.

Just checked the wiki, his background is way to complicated to explain without spoilers. Basically he was the adopted son of the medical chief.

He was an orphan with no memories, medical chief finds him and adopts him, Danzo takes interest in him, yadda yadda, Kabuto kills medical chief because Danzo wanted them to kill each other, Orochimaru has been watching over the whole thing in the shadows and indoctrinates Kabuto.

At the end of the day he ends up being a spy for like 4 different organizations as a poster above noted, making the whole deal more confusing.
