Huh, I think I've heard of that, but don't think that was one we rented. Here's some of the random stuff I remember renting and not really playing again otherwise:

Mischief Makers
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Glover
Chameleon Twist
Vigilante 8
Space Station Silicon Valley
Quest 64

Also that "memory thing" you're making sound all weird and obscure was pretty common. It does seem like it was always the shittiest games that required it, though. All the first- and second-party games I can think of saved to the cartridge. Actually that was somewhat annoying too because most of them let you save only to the cartridge.

I've always wanted to play Goemon and Quest 64. Glover was a classic though. I'm not really sure of any other funny N64 games we rented or bought but there were plenty, though a lot are cult classics like Jet Force Gemini which I didn't like very much (though I believe Chewy was a fan)

I don't really think JFG is in the same category of those games. It's one of the lesser Rare N64 games, but it was still a prime Rare game.

There's just something about third-party games in that era that was very weird. And cheap. It might be the crappiest era of third-party games. Well, at least for the N64, I guess I'm being narrow here. All the third-party top dogs at the time like Capcom and Konami were going straight for the PS1.

You needed the memory card for Majora's Mask and DK64 but that might have been about it for real stuff. Oh and Perfect Dark. And everyone knows DK64 is pretty whack except for the fact that you played as an orangutan clown.

Another classic rental was whatever that weird 3D Castlevania was.

The coolest thing about that Castlevania was how there were two different Castlevanias and we rented them both and as far as we could tell one of them was just the original game but you got to play as a werewolf instead of a vampire hunter.

I bought DK64 just for the memory pack. I was annoyed with the game before it was released because of hearing that DK rap every 10 minutes for 2 months. I had to deal with the promo video playing on loop while working at Gamestop.

Was that just a random game you played or are you Castlevania fans? I've only ever played it recently. Got 1, 3 and 4 under my belt now. They're kind of good I guess. That Bloodstained 8-bit game looks cool but I'm not sure if I'm a big enough fan

Yeah SotN came out at a good time. The Castlevania games were getting a bit stale for me and SotN was a nice change of pace. I had to buy SotN because I let a friend of mine in high school use it and then he moved off to college earlier than he said he was and took the game with him.

Do the Metroidvania ones have looser controls? The stiff controls of the old ones sound like they'd be weird in an exploration game. I don't mind them too much for a linear style, though. I was surprised something with such stiff controls could be so playable. But yeah, I definitely should check out later ones.

Once I lent my friend my kingdom hearts. Months later we were sitting on his couch and for some reason my hand felt something between the couch cushions. I pulled it out and it was my KH game (just the disc). I took it home and never let him borrow anything again

Somehow in college I ended up with a friend's copy of No More Heroes for Wii. I don't really even remember how. I think he loaned it to me because his Wii was at home (he was out of state) but I don't know why he had the game with him here or how I ended up with it since I've never been all that interested in playing it. I'm still mad that my cousin never gave me back my copy of NFL Gameday '97. Whenever I saw him the next few Christmases I would bring it up, and then finally in like 2001 he was like "Okay dude, I sat on it and broke it a long time ago"

Then there was another cousin's boyfriend who wanted to borrow a bunch of PS1 games back when they were still new-ish. I said no because I had been burned a couple of times before in life (such as the Gameday cousin) and then a couple of weeks later I find out they broke up or he moved away or some shit. I don't know what it is with people borrowing games and then taking off but I've seen it happen a lot to other people.

It's sad enough that today's kid gamers will never truly know the joy of couch co-op and gaming sleepovers but it's also sad that with the switch to digital they'll never have the life experience of their friends breaking their games somehow and being flabbergasted by how they could have for example sat on the game they borrowed

It was a big part of playing video games as a kid. My parents didn't get me many games, and I obviously had no money, so borrowing was huge.

Sort of related, is having a little brother who would constantly break your games, erase your save files, and pester you to play your video games. When he was really little he went through a phase where he used to like to bite ps1 discs and break them. Somewhere in a box at my parents' house, there's one of those 90s CD folders full of broken PS1 discs.

I wonder how kids nowadays feel about getting new games, particularly bargain digital games or indies. When I was a kid I'd save up for months to get something and it was a huge deal, but now there are tons of quality games you can get at $10. That's pretty cool but it sucks the excitement out of getting those games. Then again that could just be because I'm an adult and can afford stuff much easier, but I'd say the last couple $60 games I bought still gave me some of that childlike giddiness

When I was a kid and I saved up my money for months to get a game, you better believe I played the crap out of those games whether they were good or not. I stupidly bought Bubsy 3D and the terrible port of San Francisco Rush on PS1, and even though I knew they sucked as a kid, I played them anyways. It was also a good feeling to find hidden gems you wouldn't have played if you didn't waste your money on it.

I'm not saying today is worse, because more variety is a good thing, but I think there's too many good and cheap games available that there's less satisfaction when you get a new game. For me, at least. If I don't like the game, I can turn it off and play one of 50 other games I heard were good and that I got on sale.

Another classic formative gaming experience that isn't nearly as common anymore: losing your save file. Ever since my Kingdom Hearts file got corrupted pretty deep into the game I've always kept at least two parallel saves in games where I can. And then there was DK 64 which just fully erased everything one day and I never really played it again.

I bought Star Wars Masters of the Teras Kasi, that was a horrible game. I also bought Alundra that same year, and I agree it was worth the risk of a bad game in order to find a hidden gem.

I may have mentioned this before, but as a kid I generally didn't notice that a game was bad unless it was just hilariously weird (Alex Kidd) until after I was done with it or a month after I had given up on a bullshit level or whatever. I would always go back if a game was hard but good, but when I failed like three times on a game and gave up I would later realize it was because I didn't actually want to keep playing. This happened a lot with bad games with obscure directions, like the Shrek game on Xbox, I enver knew where to go
