Let's open with a reminder that ICE has "lost" about 1500 children, probably at least some to human trafficking: https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/26/politics/hhs-lost-track-1500-immigrant-children/index.html

Trump says:
Put pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there parents once they cross the Border into the U.S. Catch and Release, Lottery and Chain must also go with it and we MUST continue building the WALL! DEMOCRATS ARE PROTECTING MS-13 THUGS.

However:

1) March 7, 2017, Kelly confirms department is considering separating children from parents at the border:
https://www.cnn.com/2017/03/06/politics/john-kelly-separating-children-from-parents-immigration-border/

2) March 29, 2017, Kelly says they will NOT separate parents from children at the border: https://www.cnn.com/2017/03/29/politics/border-families-separation-kelly/index.html

3) December 21, 2017, Trump administration is now considering separating parents from children at the border: https://tinyurl.com/yajnxxql

4) Sessions threatens to split children from their parents: "If you don't like that, then don't smuggle children": http://www.businessinsider.com/parents-separated-from-children-in-trump-zero-tolerance-immigration-policy-2018-5

5) Kelly says children taken from their mothers will be "put into foster care or whatever": https://www.npr.org/2018/05/11/610116389/transcript-white-house-chief-of-staff-john-kellys-interview-with-npr

6) Trump reportedly chews out members of Homeland for resisting his direction to separate children from parents at the border: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/10/us/politics/trump-homeland-security-secretary-resign.html

Credit to @nycsouthpaw on Twitter for putting together a thread of these articles.

I mean, fucking Christ. Forget standard Trump nonsense, this is absolutely insane.

I mean, it's not like it's anything new. It's been happening since at least 2011:

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/01/29/us/politics/us-placed-immigrant-children-with-traffickers-report-says.html

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/obama-administration-placed-children-with-human-traffickers-report-says/2016/01/28/39465050-c542-11e5-9693-933a4d31bcc8_story.html

At least it's getting attention now, though.

There's no excuse for either, but "failed to protect" by not scouting homes carefully enough is on another level from "we have no idea where 1500 of them are from last year alone"

And the actual separation of parents/children at the border as policy IS new.

"failed to protect" with kids ending up in bad homes

That's an awfully mild way to describe literal child slavery.

You're right, I'll edit. Didn't mean to come off flippant, was just highlighting the difference between not scoping out a home well enough and literally having no idea where they end up.
