is useful as a kind of safety net to capture and control the irrational masses?

To some extent they provide some sort of centralized order and without them people would simply trade their irrationality for beliefs that have no major governing body.

Today, when people throw away the idea of god, they might invest themselves in the state to improve their lives. What happens when they can't trust either?

Isn't that a bit of what we're seeing nowadays with social unrest? Like I don't think that just because we're living in the age of science and enlightenment, we magically transformed into rational creatures.

Perhaps these systems are very much needed however I realize it's a complicated issue. Lots of lives have been used and lost in stupid wars.
