I normally don't like doing political topics, and I'm loathe to use the flair but I know people will hassle me about using it. But with some of these shootings, I keep wondering if that would've stopped it. The ones where a kid shoots their parent or siblings, or the the school shootings where they used their parent's gun.

I don't want to take guns away from good people, I just wish they'd do a better job keeping them secured so bad people can't get to them. Since IIRC a lot of guns used by criminals are ones that were stolen from someone else.

Safe Storage laws require that any gun be stored in a secure container when not in use.

I have done some research, and a few states have some sort of Safe Storage law, with Massachusetts having the strictest one. https://www.boston.com/news/local-news/2017/05/24/massachusetts-with-strong-gun-storage-law-lost-1-child Here is an article that suggests how effective it is for preventing accidental shootings.

It's just something that's been on my mind a lot, and am curious about. I'd like to hear from people on both sides of the issue, in a CIVIL WAY. If it gets to uncivil, I will not hesitate to lock this topic at the soonest I can.

Thanks. I'm probably going to regret making this topic still. >_>

A good idea in theory, but from my reading, that only prevents immediate use by someone else, and the lock can still be pried off. It's also quite expensive. The technology would likely need to be improved first before it would be a viable option.

I think it's definitely worth looking into.

I wonder how many people would bother following it, though.

I bet people would think something like "Well, no one is ever going to look inside my house so I'm not going to bother" etc.

that or "well MY kid would never shoot anyone. I don't have to do this."

That's a dumb idea. It's my house and I don't have small children, I'm going to keep them wherever I want. And if the police are in my house inspecting my guns to enforce it, I have some WAY bigger problems.

Well it sounds Constitutional

Edit: maybe, maybe not. Would this count as infringing on the right to keep arms?

My dad kept them empty under the guest room bed growing up and I never touched them. That said, I wasn't a fucking idiot at any age. Lots of kids are.

From some of my research, it was challenged at one point, but the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the highest court the state has, declared it constitutional.
People can still keep arms, they just need to do so safely.

Police in other countries don't need access to a gun at any time

Get good

Then no. Guns involved in school shootings are definitely "in use" at the time.
