The whole point of unhealthy drinks is that they taste good, why would you make them taste like ass then continue spending money on them? Plus when on top of that many people use them as a form of mental gymnastics to eat more thinking "well I probably shouldn't eat this dessert, but I had a diet soda with with so it balances out" then the dessert has 3x the calories the soda would've had.

Is it just people so in the habit of popping open a soda or something that they'll do it even if the it taste like ass?

Diet drinks don't taste bad though, I actually prefer them. And considering how many of them I drink, I'd probably have diabetes 10x over if I drank the full sugar versions.

Why not just drink healthy stuff?

I find plain water to be bland, so I find whatever excuse I can to keep hydrated - mostly diet sodas and sparkling water.

It means I don't have to be as concerned about the good craft sodas, beers and spirits, so long as I don't indulge in excess, it balances out.
