Starbucks announced a new policy Saturday that allows anyone to sit in its cafes or use its restrooms, even if they dont buy anything.

The new policy comes five weeks after two black men who hadnt bought anything were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks.

Company executives have said its previous policies were loose and ambiguous, leaving decisions on whether people could sit in its stores or use the restroom up to store managers.

Starbucks said it has told workers to consider anyone who walks into its stores a customer, regardless of whether they make a purchase.

The company said anyone can use its cafes, patios or restrooms without buying anything, but it noted workers should still call the police if someone is a safety threat.

We are committed to creating a culture of warmth and belonging where everyone is welcome, Starbucks said in a statement.

When I used to work in downtown LA I remember the stench in the library because homeless people hung out there all day. I guess that will be the future for some Starbucks stores. Starbucks opens much earlier than the library, so if you're an early bird homeless person it may be the best legal place to take your morning dump.

I work for Starbucks and I'm tired of this policy of treating customers like they're gods. They might as well request we wipe customers' asses, too. I'm all for quality service, but the company pushes it too far. We're expected to give unhappy customers as many free large drinks as they want on top of a refund if they complain. It's ridiculous and makes baristas feel disrespected.

Our racial sensitivity training will be on the 29th and we're closing down at 2:30. Should be fun.

I didnt realize the old policy even existed. It certainly wasnt enforced most of the time.

but nothing will really change. it already has been happening at every starbucks i've ever been too. i always see people with no purchase, people having meetings. I'd go in there to work sometimes and i'd see people order 1 drink and stay there for 4 hours still working without ordering more. Its already how most EVERY SINGLE starbucks i've been to operates. they're just making it an official policy. seems like such a trivial thing to protest.

Depending on where you go homeless people do often already sit inside some starbucks. as long as they're not causing any trouble it tends to not be an issue. a customers smell could be considered a "problem" if it starts to affect other guests and that would be grounds to ask them to leave. Y'all are really overreacting to this..
