Today in Living While Black: Caleb had a bit of a fever today so I stayed home with him. Not wanting to spend the whole day inside, I took him on a walk to the Kingman Island park near our house. 30 minutes into our stroll I got flagged by a security officer in one of those cars marked Special Police on the side. I was a bit confused as to whether she was looking for me to stop but she honked twice and pulled over so I got the picture.

She told me that she received a complaint from someone who said there was a suspicious man walking on the bike path with a baby. She said that when the complainant was asked to describe my race, she declined. Nevertheless, this person, a white lady on a bike who veered off as Caleb and I were walking in her direction, saw fit to report me to security.

After a pleasant conversation with the officer, she said she just wanted me to know what happened and sent me on my way. If this complaint had been made to a different security officer or an actual cop, things could have gone very differently. This is exactly why we have to talk about white privilege and why black lives matter. Because at any point doing anything anywhere my safety and my childs safety could been in jeopardy because some well intentioned complaint. But today is a good day, so we are gonna finish our stroll.

You know, I feel like calling the cops on these white people walking around with their adopted ethnic kids to balance the scales of justice but the police would probably show up and arrest the fucking kid.

I don't think this has anything to do with his race, especially when the woman who called in the complaint refused to even mention what race he was. Fathers have a well reported issue with being alone with their children regardless of their race, and that should be the real onus of discussion for this topic, not the race of the father involved this particular story.

what really struck me about that incident is that even after being proven wrong and even after the cops refused to take her side, she kept going...."HURRY UP AND GET OUT"...you're not wanted here...even as the cops were talking to the owner of the house she apparently was saying "YOU WANT HIM in your house!?"...like, what happened to make people that way....

it might have been about race or it might not. lone fathers with kids do get called on all the time, even white ones. some people don't think men should be alone with kids, or they just assume everytime that it's a kidnapper, even if the kid is laughing and playing. they also often don't let men sit next to children on planes. and will ask a woman to switch seats with the man

I wish people would stop posting this meme, as if the Starbucks incident wasnt legitimately baffling out of context.

This is both a racial and gendered issue.

Men, in general, tend to attract more suspicion when spending time alone with their children in public. The typical poster image for a kidnapper is a man (despite numbers of women being culprits too). And longstanding gender biases within society continue to dictate that hard working fathers are just "babysitting" their kids; while it's assumed the mother is the one doing the real parenting when she's in the picture. This is all rooted in the sexist belief that fathers are innately inferior care givers and can't competently adapt to their children's needs as well as a mother can.

In some cases there is also a racial aspect to the discriminating beliefs aimed at an innocent, well-intentioned male guardian of a child. Adoptive parents and mixed race couples can unfortunately experience this too often when the children don't bare a close enough resemblance to their attending father. This is particularly an issue when there's a dramatic difference in skin tone and other features between the father and children. The difference can trigger suspicion that the father (even a biological one) is not related to the children at all and is possibly a predator.

However, society tends to be much more lenient when it comes to adoptive and biological mothers who don't bare a close resemblance to their children (who may have taken more after their father). A striking difference in appearance between them generally isn't enough to spark alarm. Onlookers are actually more likely to grasp that the mother adopted the children or had them with a man of another race. And when they don't make that connection, it's often presumed the woman is at least a babysitter.

"Solo-parenting" or single fathers typically don't get similar considerations because of biases in society.

Pretty much every suburban dispatcher will tell you they get 3 or 4 calls a day about minorities doing nothing. Just for driving past their house even.

I don't deny that race was a factor here, but as others have stated, this is also a gender issue.

I'm white, and a few years ago, I went to Best Buy with my four year old daughter to purchase cell phones for my teenagers. I did not buy, mostly because the associate was rude and incompetent, unable to answer basic questions. When I told my daughter that it was time to leave, she threw a huge fit because she wanted to play with the display models, which is typical behavior for a four year old. Two blocks down the street, four cop cars surround me out of nowhere, and suddenly there are cops with guns out screaming profanity. They dragged me out of the car, kicked me several times, then put me in handcuffs and sat me on the side of a busy street for over an hour until my wife (had to leave work) to come and confirm in person that I was who I said I was.

I filed complaints with Best Buy and the Police Department. The employee got fired. Conveniently for the police, all four dashcams were turned off, and they all gave the same (false) story.

This is becoming increasingly absurd. Wtf is wrong with white people.

I remember that article.

One of my coworkers brought it up because of a similar incident happening to him. He's black and his two kids came out much lighter like their white mom. They had a bigoted neighbor living across the street who couldn't stand seeing an interracial couple with kids. On two occasions, the bigot called the police claiming that a "suspicious man" was either seen "breaking into" his own home or "trying to kidnap" his own children...

The bigot knew those were my coworker's children, but wanted to troll anyway...which could have gotten an innocent husband and father wrongfully shot.

And fyi, the bigot wasn't white.
He was just a hateful asshole who wanted to see an interracial family burn.
