Having lived in NYC before, it's definitely not unheard of. Sometimes the people will just straight up start speaking Spanish. And many times, they'd just start insulting you because they heard you wrong or got your order wrong, despite 100% knowing you gave the right order. And since I know a good amount of Spanish, I would always know what they're saying.
