A white guy in Manhattan wanted some ICE with his coffee.

Angry that staffers at a Fresh Kitchen in Midtown Manhattan were speaking Spanish rather than English, a man threatened to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement after going on a rant saying restaurant staff should be speaking English.

Honey, Im calling ICE, he says, in a videotaped interaction that was posted online.

A fellow customer posted the video to Facebook on Tuesday, and it very quickly went viral. As of press time Wednesday noon, the video had been shared 35,000 times.

Your staff is speaking Spanish to your customers when they should be speaking English, the man said. I will be following up, and my guess is theyre not documented, so my next call is to ICE to have each one of them kicked out of my country.

For the record, this is happening in New York City, home to some 2.4 million Spanish-speakers, according to the city government.

If they have the balls to come here and live off of my money I pay for their welfare, I pay for their ability to be here, he went on, breathlessly. The least they could do the least they could do! is speak English.

Tangent / funny story: I knew a guy that did driver's license exams and he failed this French woman. She turned to her friend and, in French, said something like "he's just racist against French people." He replied back (in French) "I guess I'd have to hate my whole family then too." (he doesn't have any trace of an accent in English). She got pissed and stormed out.

Yes, but the media likes to label people involved in newsworthy situations because that creates controversy and gets attention, despite the negative effects it has on society. If it were an African American man ranting instead of a white man, they probably wouldn't have mentioned that he is African American, because that doesn't create controversy.

Like everything from Texas to California used to belong to Mexico. That's like half the country. Because of that English only slightly edges out Spanish as the primary language. Stop trying to eradicate culture by assuming "everyone" should learn it as a primary or secondary language.

I've dealt with workers who can't really speak english or care clearly ESL. Its frustrating trying your point across sometimes, yes, but never once have i thought "OMG GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY IM CALLING THE FEDS"...And if they talk to other workers in a different language who gives a fuck? you said and got what you needed...stop worrying about them.."They might be talking about me!"...get over yourself. you aren't that important.

If they spoke to him in English, why should it matter what language they speak to each other in?

And if they were speaking to another customer In Spanish, I would assume one or both parties are more comfortable doing that, which I would personally consider an example of catering your service to the customer.

My experience in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea would be that people either try to use the English they know or switch to more visual forms of communication. Why?

Really a Country and especially a city really should have a single language every single person capable of speak knows(secondary language good to have though) it would be rather inconvenient and potentially distressing if heavy amounts of immigrants/refugees in moved into your area for example and the language barrier oftentimes it makes it difficult to communicate with those around you or even just at a particular business you wanted something from.

But this guy is just being a colossal prick and it sounds like the people were just talking amongst themselves in Spanish so fuck him. You call ICE on someone you know is a legit criminal(outside of being an illegal immigrant) or is a asshole busybody neighbor who keeps playing loud music, harassing you over trivial things, threatening you etc.

Not because they dont speak the way you want.

Fuck every customer service job I've worked at had people who could speak spanish and would speak to customers in spanish if they felt more comfortable. And not just spanish, Farsi, Hindi, any other language that was prominent in the area...Why is that such a bad thing?

Pretty much every person I interacted with in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland spoke English. They didnt seem to mind. Italy was a little less common, and people were harder to understand. But nobody was ever rude about it.

I worked at a restaurant and had to take a call as a manager from an old lady that was upset because her husband stood in line behind a Spanish chick that was speaking Spanish to my guy, who was from damn I cant remember but definitely spoke Spanish, taking her order. That was the worst phone call I ever had to deal with.

For Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, I was typically in more tourist-heavy places, so they're far more accommodating when it comes to English. It'd probably be different if you go to rural places where there's less exposure to English or people who can't speak the local language.

Hong Kong was a British colony, so English is taught in schools and most people know how to speak or at the very least understand it to some extent. I fell back to English a lot since my Cantonese is awful, but I didn't have trouble communicating.
