all games featured tag mechanics but the actual switching of characters was stripped away from console ports, at least for the playstation versions.

dunno if the saturn versions kept them in though.

edit: just looked up msh vs sf for saturn and you could switch characters... pretty neat actually since you never could on ps1.

Yeah, Capcoms Saturn ports were pretty close to Arcade Perfect while the Playstation ports had to be stripped down.

The only Capcom VS games you couldn't actively switch characters in was the Capcom vs SNK games. They utilized the King of Fighters format.

X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom (1, 2, 3/Ultimate and Infinite) and Tatsunoko vs Capcom all had tag mechanics.

In PlayStation as well? What were the buttons on for that? The only thing I can do is an assist. Didnt it used to be HP+HK?

Well, no. As was already mentioned in the topic the Playstation ports had the tag feature stripped out. But you didn't specify this was about the Playstation version. I was just talking about the main arcade versions.
