I work at an elementary school.

There is about 40 students in the after-school program. It was a nice 70 degrees today with a breeze. None of them wanted to play on the playground. All they want to do is watch youtube. That's all they do at home too. Their parents don't even let them play outside by themselves. And one 2nd grader I have to walk to his house everyday when the program is done because his parents don't trust him to walk 2 blocks.

And this has a very visible effect. Kids will always have some issues working with others. That's completely normal. But it's fucking out of control. There is 0 middle ground anymore. It immediately goes from normal to screaming. There is a list of like 30 kids at the school that "aren't allowed" to be in the same class because they'll just scream at each other across the room all day otherwise.

They have no idea how to work things out. And they get their conflict resolution skills from fucking youtube stars.

Back in my time, most time after school was spent outside. No one would think twice about having an 8 year old outside by themself.

It's not fear it's reality. Plus if they get hurt or something unsupervised you can be held for neglect.

Nah, I live in Australia, I'm not going to get sued for anything.

When I was 9 I crashed my BMX on a dirt track and couldn't move for 45mins as I was in so much pain and the bike was on top of me. Do you think my parents were held for neglect?

Some guy tried to lure me to his creepy van when I was out riding my bike by myself. You know why I didn't get kidnapped? Because I'm not a moron. Teach your kids about stranger danger and you typically don't have to worry about that crap. Now if someone just grabs you when your guard is down that's a different story.

Kids shouldn't play outside by themselves or walk home that young. That's just common sense. The parents should sit outside with them though and not let any child that young spend too much time on the internet.

The internet gives a warped sense of what the world is really like.

The other day I was trying to get into a D&D session on Discord, and they were freaking out over drama, who gets to party with who, etc., which made the DM drink themselves stupid from stress. There must have been quite a few younger people. I didn't get what was worth freaking out about. It was all pretty standard "herding cats" involving organizing anything on the Internet. I was sitting dumbfounded at how sheltered these people must be to have zero coping skills. Jesus fuck what do they do if they have to tackle some real life issue.

Yea, its weird man. Thankfully I don't see it much around here because I see kids playing outside all the time, but I do hear about it often

Its so bizarre to me. I was a kid in the 90s when we had some of the coolest shows and video games and the internet was this new thing with a ton of content to explore, yet I couldn't stand being cooped up inside. When night time hit, yea I loved playing my games and surfing the web but I couldn't imagine missing out on playing outside to do that stuff

Yeah, my mom works at a poorer school and it's not like this either. Plenty of kids walk home alone because they have to and it sounds like their parents don't watch some of them enough. There are quite a few problem children, though.

Yeah, it's definitely a troubling trend. I'm not worried that kids like watching videos or playing video games, but you're right on with the isolationist part of this and why it's a problem.

Kids need to socialize.

My school is very high-poverty so I'm sure that inflates the issues a significant amount. Not saying it's like this everywhere.

I mean yeah I get why most kids prefer to just sit in the gym and play fortnite. But they isolate themselves from other kids so much that it's hurting their relationship building skills.

Also I said "kids these days." I'm officially an old fart

I doubt this school is representative of schools everywhere.

No, they can't use phones during recess. Most kids just sit around. A few use the swings or basketball court.

After school though they are allowed to use their ipads which is how they watch youtube.
