We've got consoles and PCs that can do nearly anything but now they're just making battle royales, reboots, or games that are highly derivative of something that's already been made.

what ive come to realize is that video games never really changed, its been the same unimaginative garbage since the dawn of man. we are just old now and self-aware about what is coming out.

how many street fighter clones, DOOM clones, GTA clones, CoD4 clones, etc are there? how many times has Capcom re-released RE4 and Nintendo like half their library? Remember after WoW when MMORPGs were coming out every week? etc etc

where the form is inherent, endlessly refinable, and able to be made unimaginably more complex.

This is something you can say about any medium to defend from the fact it's stuck in a rut now. So you're wrong.

There hasn't been a better RPG since Oblivion.
Third person games will never be better than Witcher 3.

I wish they'd make more 12-15 hour linear FPS games. Even a shitty game like that is still semi fun.

How to make video games more complex? Damn that's easy, more weapons, more mechanics, more players, more options, more to do, more to see, more polygons, more dialog, more interaction, more everything.

Please explain how you make painting more complex than it was at its peak several hundred years ago

more paint, more colours (yes), more surfaces to paint on, more people to look at paintings, larger canvases, more precision

Pillars of Eternity 2 is how games should be done. No microtransactions, no loot boxes, the only day 1 dlc is free and a bunch of features included in game that could have been dlc... Weren't. Plus it's a complete game a minimum of bugs and is a blast to play.

If you only focus on the AAA industry, then sure, there are a lot of derivatives. But step outside that bubble and you'll realize that games are far, far more varied now than they've ever been.

If you're talking about indie games, do realize that they are often derivatives too, just of things that are much older.

There's nothing wrong with derivatives though, no gaming idea has ever appeared from thin air.

Some are, but we also have new ideas and expansions of old concepts. And more importantly, the variety we have now is far greater than it used to be when looked at as a whole.

We should also be careful with what we consider "derivative." New takes on old ideas shouldn't be thought of as derivative. That word should be used for things like the military FPS games of the past decade, or the open-world sandbox collect-a-thons we have now.

There's some pretty fascinating innovation happening in the VR space. I think that's where a lot of growth will happen in the game industry in the next 5-10 years.

Every color in the spectrum the human eye can understand has been utilized: you do not invent new colors without altering human biology.

but in the end none of those suggestions were super serious. I was more just poking fun at how you can't just say "more <thing related to medium>" as a way of increasing complexity

Not to be a pedant, but I thought the OP made it very clear that "more" does not mean better. Introducing "more of everything" makes a game as wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle. And that's because:

Reposting the quote that you're continuing to misuse isn't a rebuttal.

I'm sorry but saying games are necessarily in a better state now than they were 15 years ago because of "more polygons" or "more mechanics" leads me to believe you're missing the point entirely. In fact I think we're on two different wavelengths here.

Another choice quote:

"Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

I can think of a few different games of the last 20 or so years that are indicative of what makes video games a great medium and they all adhere to that mantra. And now the technology is even better yet games, conceptually speaking, have stagnated. Why is that? (Say it with me)
