It's apparently a slur. Does that mean we can't use it here anymore?

There was an incident. I can't remember what it was exactly, but someone or something used the word, people got really upset and apparently a lot of Inuit people view it as an offensive slur.

Eskimo is not viewed as a slur in Alaska btw

Also, I think Inuit is Canada, and in Alaska it's Inupiaq

Why would you call them eskimo if you know they call themselves 'Inuit?'

Why not refer to them by the name they use to talk about themselves?

I remember hearing about this but I don't know anything about why it's supposed to be bad.

I just switched over to "Inuit" and my life didn't really change any.

Eskimo is only derogatory because it's actually a specific tribe. Calling any native an Eskimo is like calling a random African a Zulu.

At least that's what I recall from Alaska studies back in high school.

Inuit has been the preferred vernacular for well over a decade. If this is coming as news to you, perhaps you should be more engaged.

The term Eskimo is certainly considered offensive by aboriginal people of the north, not just in Canada. Though I think to most the term wouldn't be taken as offensively as say the N word, among others.

Please note, Canadian Inuit is listed in that article.

It says Inupiat also, but the true spelling is Inupiaq

You know what, you may be entirely correct. I'm hearing that Inuit may also be a slightly dated term. In day to day conversations, I would typically use First Nations, Indigenous or in some specific cases, Aboriginal.

The distinction between first nations people in northern regions vs southern regions is likely antiquated.

Or Eskimo Pie.

I could be misremembering Alaska history but this. If they're an Eskimo and you call then an Eskimo it's no issue.
