I reached (and died on) the first boss. But since I got that far, I'm now allowed to use my Blood Echoes to power up my character. So yeah, about time.

You need an Insight point to level up, that is around the time you get one.

Which first boss?

You can get some a lot sooner by finding the madman's knowledge in the sewers.

If you know where to go, and can actually get somewhere. Last time I played, I kept dying around the bridge with the wolf creatures. I'd get past the fire with the people on a good day. Reaching the boss was a milestone.

I'm guessing that your biggest killer in this game is lack of patience. Dying to wolves is understandable, but the mob is easy if you keep baiting them out one or two at a time. Also figure out which attacks will keep enemies in hitstun and which ones can hit multiple enemies at once to make things a little easier for yourself. The charge R2 on the axe is a crazy good attack as it knocks all enemies that early on backwards and has killer range.

Got through the first time, died to wolves, then got angrier and angrier to repeated deaths, yes. :P

You go pass two paths that lead to the sewers before you reach the wolves, try exploring more.

Also, you do not have to fight every enemy you come across. If you are having trouble with the wolves then just run past them.

I couldn't get anywhere I could explore that I knew of, unless they are right before the wolves. Wolves was my far point, even getting there was a miracle. I've managed to get a locked gate open next to the second spawn area since though.

Also, didn't want enemies chasing me into more enemies and have twice the trouble. If they aren't in the way, it isn't a worry, but I'm going directly past them, so I'd prefer them gone.

Immediately after the villagers around the fire, if you hug the left wall in the area with the single big brick guy, you can drop down into an area with caged dogs. From here, one path leads back to the dark house, which leads back up to the opposite side of those wolves, and the same shortcut gate you mentioned not far. The other path leads to the sewers.

On the opposite side of the brick guy area, near the roaming hunting party somewhere up a bunch of stairs, is a bunch of scaffolding you can drop down directly into the sewers.

Both are easy to find if you just spend 2 seconds exploring, and give you more options than beating your head against a brick wall of two wolves that you don't even need to fight.

Ah, dropping into other areas. Explains why I didn't notice / pay attention to them. I've been careful about making sure I have a place to retreat to when I need to heal, and doesn't help that I don't know where they lead. I knew the path leading to the first boss from the friend that gave me their old copy when they bought the GotY Edition.

Also really careful around drops because I'm betting fall damage is a thing.

Easy way to beat those wolves is you go up the back way on the stairs and you can lure them to the house. They can't get in so you can just poke at them until they die.

The first time I actually learned how to play a Souls game, that was amazing to learn. Just running ahead, grabbing what I needed, and then not caring about dying was amazing.
