Where you're not looking at the TV head on, but you've got two 2-seater sofas facing each other and the TV's to the side.

That's the best way I can describe it, you must know what I mean.

Is there anything inherently wrong with the layout? Or should you look to have a sofa looking dead on at a TV at all times?

There's nothing wrong with that layout.

It's just not for me. I'd rather have something like

I would like those sofas closer to the table so if I have friends over, we can play games on it.

Honestly, I don't think a TV should be the focal point of the room. It should add to the room, but not be the center of attention. When people are inside, they should be the center of attention, as I feel it'd encourage socializing and interaction.

My goodness I think you've just solved it

This is a poky 500sqft 1 bed apartment by the way. Completely hypothetical of course.

But you'll appreciate TV will naturally be the focus of attention in such a small space, which I will mostly be occupying alone anyway or playing games with my buddies on xbox or whatever whenever I do have company

See now what you need is you take that setup from the picture, then add a tv in front of the fireplace, another smaller flatscreen on the table, then wall mount a tv on each side of the main one to cover the small windows there, then install a projection tv by the patio so it shows on the wall behind the left couch. Thatll probably cover your needs, but if not theres always the ceiling you can use too.
