Basically, an insanely OP character who is an unknown to the general public.
I mean, with DC and Superman, people expect him to be OP, thats what they like, hes world renowned.

But with Captain Marvel, its like, heres this new character, she is far more powerful than everyone in the MCU. Look how awesome she is. Enjoy.

How will the general public react?

Her power level can be whatever the writers want it to be.

As for how people will react to her, it's a toss up. Modern track record is spotty on how cinema audiences react to a powerful woman.

They reacted well to Wonder Woman well, but not so much to Rey. Granted other factors are in play. Wonder Woman was a well-established character, but Rey was a complete unknown until the films came out. Carol sits somewhere in the middle.

As long as the story is good, the villain is good, the fights are good, and the acting is slightly above average, then it will be liked.

Since her movie is taking place in the 90s(or so I've heard), she could totally be off planet between then and Infinity War. We'll have to wait and see what happens in her movie.

Brie Larson isnt a very convincing actor to play a Superman equivalent character.

Gal Gadot is skinny but was toned and has a fierceness that could pull off Wonder Woman, Larson looks like a unathletic LA valley girl.

Hopefully Im wrong though and she kills it.

True, I'm just anxious gotta wait a year to get a conclusion.

So glad they're wrapping this up in 2 years.

Depends on how OP they make her, I mean Thor is pretty strong but if she is supposed to be the Superman of the MCU I can see the story being silly.

Lol, I remember that tweet. It was a bad look. I still like her, though. Shes adorable with that smile. Not sure if she can convincingly portray a super hero like Capt. Marvel. Btw, are they going to call her Captain or Ms. Marvel?

This is also another point.
Every actor and actress in the MCU seem like cool people, but Brie Larson seems a bit unhinged.
If the actress is not likeable, how will the character?

She's like a superhero Rosie the Riveter in the books, or was before Civil War 2 set her characterization on fire (seriously these comic book crossovers are the worst). She's like a distaff Steve Rogers. Maybe slightly more of a hard-ass.

If they can get her close to SueDonnic's Carol, she ought to slay.

It depends.

Wonder Woman
- has a personality
- has struggles and consequences

Rey
- lacks a defined personality
- acquires everything with ease

It's as simple as that.

There are a few of us (like 12 in total) who will never like "Captain Marvel" on account of her stealing a golden age icon's name. That won't affect the general public's perception of her. A few people aged 50 or older might turn their heads and ask, "Captain Marvel's a woman now?" without realizing it's a different character. Likewise, her comics are unknown to the general public, so it doesn't matter how unlikable she is there.

What it comes down to is whether or not she has personality and whether or not she earns her victories. If the enemies swarm around her, she waves her hand, and they're vanquished in the name of the strong independent woman, she's gonna be loved by Tumblr and no one else. But if she has a rounded personality, faces suitable opposition, and achieves victory after physical or emotional conflict, she should be liked by the general public.

One thing they would be insanely stupid to try and do is take the "dramatic Superman" route and make her an invincible character whose conflict comes from within. If there isn't an enemy in the film that can physically knock her to the ground, crowds are going to hate her in spite of everything else.

It's dull when Superman does it. But if Captain Marvel went that route, everyone and their brother would claim Marvel made her invincible simply because she's a woman. And whether or not that was the case, there'd be no way to refute it.

Why don't people care when other characters inherit a superhero's name?

We can have 5 or 6 different Green Lanterns, like 4 different Flashes, 4 Spider-Men, 3 Captain Americas, but suddenly it's a problem when a woman inherits the title of a hero that she was romantically engaged with.

The only one that bugs me is Thor.
Thor isn't a title, it's literally his God damn name. The title is "God of Thunder".

I can't just walk up to someone and hand them my name badge and say "You're Mark now."

Exactly. It didn't help that the writing for the first 10 or so issues was so bad it made me quit reading completely. Just pitiful. Almost as bad as early Spidergwen.

What if we just have Rogue permanently steal her powers like in the 90s cartoon?

She can do that after Phoenix reboots the universe at the end of IW2. You'd have the Brotherhood lead by Mystique as your antagonists, and one of the things Rogue would do at the climax is put Carol in a coma. She can switch sides next movie.

But really, without the Kang the Conqueror story culminating in the infamous 'rape of Ms. Marvel ' embarrassing the studio, these writers don't really have much motivation to write Carol out of the MCU except to copy 90's Rogue.
