It really depends. If I'm coming up to what seems like a penultimate part of the game, I'll create a separate save point, just so I have a way to go back beyond the point of no return. If it's a game that has sim like elements, like Persona 4 and 5, I'll use the entire amount of saves that they give me. If it's just an everyday mundane RPG, I'll just use one.
