Misuse of property? Whose property? Property denotes ownership. Culture is not owned. It doesn't stay the same either, it's malleable.

At the end of the day, calling the exchange of ideas, art, styles, traditions, etc. morally wrong is incompatible with any decent set of values that recognize freedom. At that point you've completely lost the plot.

Its not an exchange though.

In an overall sense it is.

It isn't like a business exchange/deal between two parties.

She made multiple songs about rap, weed, sex, diss artist, went to bet awards then rejected all of it and sent several shots about how crude the same kind of hip hop she was just making was.

Eh, that sounds completely normal for a person her age to be into all that though. You know, except for being a celebrity and musician and all but you know what I mean.

Being into wasnt the problem, the problem was she looked like fucking malibus Most wanted on stage, and the second she was done she turned on it.

This is someone whos on record for not listening to rap upuntill a few years prior

A lot of entertainers adopt personas that arent what they are actually like IRL

Most peoples personas arent what you could call a caricature

And that matters why? They are appropriating different cultures as caricatures to make money. Shouldnt you be offended?

Like the whole high school girl in the Chinese dress thing. I sincerely doubt she was trying to mock or disrespect any Chinese people yet there's a lot of people attacking her for that.

yeah, seemed stupid to me. like she wasn't wearing make up or doing her way in any sort of stereotypical way, it was really just a dress that seemingly was worn because she liked how it looked.

Who has time for anyone who gets offended about that shit? Go ahead and be angry, I will continue doing what makes me happy.

A lot of cultural appropriation doesn't matter.

But some does. Like, if you were racist toward black people in the 70s or so, you shouldn't get to indulge in the genres of music they made.

Who says it's one sided? Cultures rub off on one another. There are no rules set in stone or anything. There are no terms and conditions on which element of what culture is okay to disseminate among any other particular cultures... because it's all up in the air.

Why not? Maybe the music is what helped humanize black people for that individual and helped him understand how stupid his racism was.

Then that would be good, I guess! But until they realize their flagrant violations of human rights, it still feels dirty to me. And I know that not everybody who appropriates the culture is going to suddenly be enlightened and accepting/friendly to the people whose culture they're indulging in.

To follow from that example, I'm sure there were many people who never repudiated their racist views, but who still enjoyed rock and roll or jazz.

"Stay away from my water fountain, you filthy [pejorative]" while simultaneously getting to enjoy the best parts of what they did. It's messed up. It's like using a horse to pull your buggy all day and then kicking it off a cliff when you're finished with it.

Because thats the difference between misappropriation and diffusion.

If it was properly exchanged it wouldnt be a disrespect or warping of the message

These guys are trying to dance around it to avoid sounding racist, so theyre using the phrase dominant culture. If it was a white guy enjoying and being inspired by culture in China, Mexico or somewhere he is the minority, theyd still be criticizing him.
