For the current older generations, yes it's probably pretty lonely. But technology for our generation with social media etc means we're connected in many ways, plus we have no idea how technology will further change.

Awfully nice?

When I get too old to take care of myself, I would never want to force that responsibility on to a family member.

We've had to for our grandmother and an aunt, it's hell.

Professional care is worth the cost.

I think folks today dont know what they want and are lost. you're told what to do and who to be as young adults. when youre actually done with school, who are you? The one planned by others? or, are you someone else? ... what if you don't have a plan in life, you become someone else's plan.

Yeah cause having family means tons of visitors for people in care homes near the end of their days.

Wait..... No that's not how it is at all.

I'm 35, have never wanted kids and don't expect to ever change my mind. I don't necessarily think I will live to be old. I mean it depends on how old we're talking, but like old old... nah. I doubt I'll make it to that.

Back when I was young I wanted kids and a dog and a white picket fence and all the shit I never had.... Now I'm 35 as well and I'm with you. I'm not dead set against it but I doubt I ever will. Haven't wanted kids since I was maybe 20. If not younger.

Also my family is kinda messed up not sure I'd be doing the kids any favours.

I'm torn. I can see it either way.

If you don't have kids, you can travel and have more fun and live more stress free because you don't have that responsibility on your shoulders.

But you won't be able to teach someone about life. You won't be able to share your favorite games and movies and places with a little copy of you and the person you love most. You won't see them grow and you won't be able to pass on your heritage and success into the future. Your legacy vanishes.

Not having kids is definitely the easier and more "fun" route, but having kids is probably the more satisfying and rewarding route.

Let's be real though so many kids are contradictory and uninterested in the parents favourite things that that's not really a relevant thing most of the time.

Probably, but you have to pick the lesser of two evils

1) don't have any kids, end up feeling lonely and having to find other things to keep you entertained

or

2) get married, have kids, end up divorced and losing half of everything you own, have your ex-wife turn the kids against because and talk about how terrible of a person you are while she takes thousands of dollars from you each month leaving you unable to afford a decent retirement

Yeah but sometimes they are interested. And when they're not, you can spend time and resources to figure out what does interest them and then derive great satisfaction from enabling them to pursue those things.

Always examine the lives of people who obsess over having kids.

You'll find a lot of the time that they have absolutely nothing else to be proud of, no real accomplishments. So the kids become their focal point by default.

I'm adopted, so I've never known biological family. I appreciate my family, but there is a serious disconnect. I feel like they're a nucleus and I'm just an electron orbiting on the periphery. I've never really truly bonded with any of them the way I suspect non-adopted people do.

@LinksLiege

Anyone can be a breeder, takes no talent or skill, and besides having no accomplishments the people obsessed with having kids gave up their dreams, goals, and ambition long ago or quit when it got too hard showing they did not want what they were chasing enough.

There are people who chase their dreams with kids but they are almost always forced to put family first where the person without kids does not have to make that sacrifice.

That's one of the reasons I like Steven Wilson so much. He's outright said he has no interest in raising a family because he doesn't want his focus diverted from his music whatsoever.

It's hilarious to see people act like being a parent is some grand achievement. Congrats - there are teenagers in high school who have accomplished the same thing because they didn't pay attention in sex education class.
