Your answer may vary, but a lot of people like to make programming sound easy.

"I got a job in 3 months after taking a course on Treehouse."

"I get to work from home."

"Anyone can code."

etc.

One thing that I wish I knew before getting my programmer degree, jobs aren't guaranteed once you graduate. Programming is a talent and you have to prove your talent like an artist basically.

It's not like being a shitty cop or teacher and still getting the job (I wish).

I'm voting yes since I have yet to see any of this pay off for me. Granted, I have other issues so I can't entirely blame the career (lack of jobs near me).

Should have done programming as a supplement rather than a focus tbh. Something like a data science/analytics or networking core with a solid grasp on a few programming languages is pretty highly valued.

I vote no because it's a valuable skill-set. I think the people who are complaining are honestly just not skilled. It's not something where you can just fake it and put it minimal effort and get by like someone else mentioned.

If you can't take the heat, stay out of the compiler.

My backup plan is to get some CompTIA certs I guess.

I have my degree in programming and I am trying to finish up computer science.

A classmate of mine with no experience got an offer from google for 108k starting salary

you have to actually be smart though. Most people arent. You have to be able to psuedo code anything on the fly

In comp sci, interviewers will actually quiz you before you can get a job.

most people who get the degree cheated their way through school

The job I just interviewed for is a 65k paying job (entry) and they quized me for an hour on the phone and an hour in person (second round)

Realistically, good programmers will get 65k after graduating. The best in the class get 100k starting

and the ones who dont know shit wont get an offer anywhere

lmao

My company recently hired a new guy to be a front-end developer, and after working with him for a week or so I have discovered that he's not really a programmer at all. Honestly I think all he knows how to do is copy dashboards from the internet and then change the text on the page.

In my senior design class, I had the opportunity to work with almost every graduating senior.

80% of them are literal morons who steal code from the internet. They don't understand the concepts and don't attempt to. They work for the grades and not for the knowledge.

I'm not saying I'm great at it, but at least I make an effort.

That depends on the employer. At a sufficiently poorly managed company, people can get by by kissing ass, lying, blaming other people for their mistakes, etc.

I just went through 2 interviews for a web developer position for a casino.

They said the salary was 71.5k, but I did not make it through the second interview.

I knew all the front-end shit that they wanted, but not C#/MySQL for back-end.
