They have a hand in like almost 90% of all anime released nowadays. And they do make video games, just really shitty MMOs that never leave their country or... just a lot of bad games in general imo. I'm Korean, and I think Koreans make a really shitty video game dev.

If you read some of their game related webtoons, you sorta get that whoever wrote that never played a game outside Korean ones because... most of the ideas are terrible or not feasible and would not be fun irl.

Most Koreans think that any game that doesn't fit at least one of the following:

1. Has MMO capabilities
2. Was made by Blizzard
3. Has to do with soccer
4. Is Mario(other Nintendo franchises don't count at all. ONLY MARIO. Oh and Pokemon too I guess but that's too niche and otaku lol)

...is automatically shit.

As a Korean, I don't trust any Korean game will be good enough for international recognition. Ever.

Right now the fad is flooding the market with crappy mobile games, and that's where it'll stay for a looooong time.

They make a lot of MMOs, so much so that the term "Korean MMO" is a real term.

Maple Story and Gunbound got close.

Strangely, Korean MMOs are huge in Latin America

Yeah I don't really know Korea's modern perception of Pokemon, but I know when I was a kid, literally the entirety of Korea was nuts for it for a while. I know they also demanded Pokemon GO be ported there when the whole North Korea situation meant South Korea had poor GPS coverage or whatever, so Pokemon GO and most other GPS games didn't get ported there. I dunno, I didn't really look too hard into it.

But yeah their gaming culture is fucking garbage. My uncle used to really like PC shooters though, and Korea has a bunch of CS knock offs.

Basically all they have are Blizzard knock offs, MMOs, and... I dunno they did have a good handheld culture. Probably why I like handhelds so much cuz that was the only halfway decent thing that got a lot of games

Korea either invented, or massively popularized, the Freemium MMO. They've died down a bit now, but for the Aughts, they were hugely popular to the point of oversaturation.

I think Maplestory spent more time on the front page popularity list than any other game in Gamefaqs history.

Ragnarok Online was the most popular MMO in my country, no other games managed to reach the same popularity.
