They seem to cause a good amount of controversy especially with Battle Front II. It isn't so bad if it's just cosmetic items but when it's items that give you an advantage over people who didn't get the items then it's bullshit.

Loot boxes are so awful with gambling like mechanics that they are making microtransactions look benign. So no, they won't be going anywhere

Nope. They're here to stay and will only get worse over time, but for now I think the accelerated push to monetize all aspects of game play has been slowed due to the SW:BF2 and SoW backlash
