Francois says he hasn't officially chosen a school yet.

Right now, he's considering several law schools.

...How is he considering law schools if he hasn't gone to undergraduate yet? I think whoever wrote this is confused.

Darrin Francois, a student at the International High School of New Orleans, was accepted to 83 colleges thanks to hard work and the school's insistence that students apply to as many colleges as possible, which IHS helps them do by encouraging students to create a daily routine of applying to multiple schools a day.

WGNO reports that about a dozen students at the school have been accepted to at least 20 schools.

There are, which is why you really have to think how college acceptances and the like are also skewed by relative privilege.

That's not racism, that's recognizing that affirmative action in college acceptance exists.

The valedictorian at my school was Indian and got rejected from Harvard, meanwhile #14 was Hispanic and accepted. And our valedictorian was an absolute fucking genius.

Yes. Diversity (not just race) is still a compelling end with regards to higher education admission. However, race cannot be the sole factor, be overweighted in comparison to other factors, and anything that even resembles a racial quota is likely to be canned by lawsuit. If the admissions process can be demonstrated to be an individualized process, then diversity criteria are viewed with less suspicion.

the reason these kids get in everywhree isn't that they check the 'black' box

it's that the 'black' box is worth >0 points

and basically at the top every candidate has about the same fundamental set of qualifications: perfect grades, test scores, recommendations, and quality essays

so a slight edge produces a massive shift in results

it's not particularly unfair, esp considering how few of these students there are.

i got in to GA Tech, visited, and decided to take the free ride at UMCP then went on to get a free master's at JHU

I do have to question why the media feels the need to write articles about this every time a black kid does it, though. Never see these kinds of pieces about Asians.

This isn't all about you though :P

The system that is using race as a significant admissions variable is an unjust one. The counterargument is usually to bring up all these other injustices, like slavery and continuing inequality in the modern era, but I don't think that another injustice is the right way to address these issues.

imo my experience was not atypical aside from the part where i got a position meant for a PhD candidate when i was applying as a master's candidate. we changed my application after the fact

We can be honest and admit this is all horseshit?

Black students get a +310/2400 bias on their SAT scores, while Asians get -140/310. So an Asian with a 2100 is considered equal to a black with 1650. That is fucking absurd. Let the smartest kids, don't pass on the brighter ones to fill some fucking quota.

Apparently the bias chart was pulled from a sociologists book from 1997 so the data is no longer valid.

I'm sure he was in a position to where his application fees were waived. He's probably shopping for offers.

Lol @ affirmative action whining when despite all of the "affirmative action" less than 10% of the population of each Ivy League school (and most high and mid tier schools) is African American and there are less African Americans and Hispanics in higher education today than there were 30+ years ago.

Legacy admittance and generational wealth have resulted in more consistent "handouts" than affirmative action (which benefits White women more statistically than either gender of any other color) ever has.

Lord forbid someone is brown and can read and they got into a school because adcoms think they're a good fit, rather than because they can be on a brochure as a "We Admit Black People" flag.
