definitely prefer the 1st ni no kuni since oliver was more relateable as just an ordinary boy who gradually became who he became to be when the game progressed. and I prefer esther over tani.

If the first game is Spirited Away, the sequel is Michael Bay tier.

-The combat is worse. It's boring at best.
-The story is extremely basic and dull. There are so many illogical interactions to the point it feels like Evan has Alzheimer's disease.
-The characters aren't deep enough.
-The mandatory side content and waiting for gold to accumulate is artificial padding in the worst way.
-The overall game is worse in literally every category except visuals, which are roughly the same.

I got into the first game despite the hand holding. My kids loved watching me play and naming the creatures was thier favorite thing, so I played through the main story which was alright.
I probably won't play the new one anytime soon. In fact, the whole jrpg genre seems like a time suck to poor old me.

beat em both and the second really doesn't focus on character development or world building at all and thats a huge disappointment for me

It was the most disappointed I have been this generation, by far. The first NnK game was my favourite thing last gen. It hit me in the feels while the new one hit me in the balls.

don't get it twisted, it's a fun rpg if you just want a more active battle system and don't care much for story. It's just that after playing the first one, which was a great story being told to you and had both cute and sad/meaningful moments, one would expect more from a sequel
