About to start a playthrough. I've beaten the game once before on the PS3 version but I'm not sure what sphere grid that was. Gonna play the PS4 version this time

default - each character starts in their own "style"

expert - everyone starts in the middle and you can make them into whatever "class", if you will, that you want

iirc

well in the classic sphere grid each character is on a set path that they really cant go off of
no matter what you do early on lulu will always be a black mage.

at the end of the game you can unlock parts of the sphere grid to make characters whatever you want but thats not until late game.

on expert sphere grid the paths arent blocked off and you can go off the rails and do whatever you want like turning lulu into a physical fighter with her tiny doll of terror!

but since you dont have a set path its a lot easier to screw up and make a character completely useless aside from just kimarhi

one of the best parts of FF X is watching one of Lulu's dolls run up, do a silly looking drop kick, deal 99999 damage, and having a giant enemy fall to the ground defeated as the doll waddles its way back

anyway, I think the main difference between the two is that standard offers higher stats but limited options, while the expert grid allows you more freedom at the cost of lower stats
neither is "worse" but if you fill them out then standard is better, although it's not that big of a difference and I don't believe anything would really change since it's not exactly a hard game

I prefer expert, but I think the consensus is standard is best

Standards has more nodes and while it ultimately doesn't matter in what you're able to complete, having extra stats to dick around with is always nice

Standard is the original sphere grid.

Expert was added on the International and remaster versions.
