Kramer vs. Kramer's problem isn't so much that it is generic as much as it has aged extremely poorly. Apocalypse Now was not the Vietnam movie that was needed at the time (and in fact that Vietnam movie would not get made until Martin's son made a far better Vietnam film in Platoon), but it grew to become something else entirely. Whereas Kramer vs. Kramer stacks the deck a little bit too hard for the dude. Streep's character is entirely absent from the movie until the court scene, and she comes off as extremely unsympathetic. Also it doesn't really tell the truth either. Even back then, if a husband requested the kids, he got it nearly all the time. It's still that way today, despite misconceptions

Not so much a crime, more yet another argument that the Oscars aren't really relevant, never were, and people should stop pretending that they're anything other than a Hollywood circle jerk.

Even in the most legitimate of comparisons it's incredibly unfair and subjective as fuck to compare movies with entirely different tones or in entirely different genres, and the Academy Awards have never been anything resembling legitimate.
