These are not ground invasion support ships. It's an aircraft carrier and missile ships. It's more than likely a show of force. You can't remove a dictator sitting in a ship off the coast just firing missiles off all day

why not? if they have intel on where he is couldn't they just launch a fuckton of missiles and overwhelm their anti-missile defenses?

- and no i don't subscribe to the theory that this is a sign of anything.

You would still need ground support for any type of take over of a country. Sure, maybe they get lucky and kill Assad but what it equates to is basically a siege

Syrian forces are battle hardened vets at this point. Alot more than 5000 troops and air support would be needed

I think you're seriously underestimating the air superiority of the US in a fight with a nation like Syria...

The Iraqi forces were just a bunch of thugs. Syria has been fighting a war for how long now? What makes you think they are just gonna roll over. Although, I'm actually happy you have so much faith in our military. I have no doubt they could get it done, I'm just saying more numbers would be needed

That's a good point. Syria has been in a civil war for years, to have part of the military mutiny essentially creating another civil war within a civil war is quite the thought exercise.

We are moving our fleets around as the geopolitical situation changes. It's not like they sit around at port all the time until we call them up for war.

He may have been referring to the first gulf war wherein we roflstomped the shit out of the Iraqi army that had up until a few years prior fought an 8 year war against Iran. You can clearly see the effects of overwhelming air superiority in that campaign.

Would the 5000 or marines in that task force be able to take over the country? Of course not. Would they be effectively able to fight a battle for a city or storm strong points? Yes.

In either case I doubt that it is the intent. The ground forces are simply assigned to that task force as part of it's make up as a rapid deployment force for flashpoints.

Late last year the US had three aircraft carrier battle groups near North Korea at the same time which actually was noteworthy.

One aircraft carrier carries a lot of firepower but there isn't anything noteworthy about the US having one in the Eastern Med or the Persian Gulf. When the Iraq war kicked off the US had six carriers on the scene along with a massive buildup of Army and Airforce around the country.

Can I see a source? Not that I don't believe you, I just couldn't find anything when searching this.

My bad. What I read was posted on April 5th, before the airstrike. On a side note, there is a yahoo uk&ireland article saying 200 Russian troops were killed in the airstrikes.

The '200 russians killed' thing is from back in February. They were mercenaries that neglected to tell the US or Russian governments what they were doing and got blown up when they came too close to US special forces.

The Russians allow/encourage mercenaries to go to Syria to fight for the Assad regime. The US supports a group of mostly Kurdish rebels and the border between them and Assad's forces is currently the Eurphates river. The mercenary group crossed to the wrong side of the river to try and seize a position probably not realizing there were US forces nearby. The US bombed the shit out of them and they retreated.

The man explains that American forces used artillery and helicopter gunships to repel the assault. They were all shelling the holy **** out of it, and our guys didnt have anything besides the assault rifles. Nothing at all, Im not even talking about shoulder-fired SAMs or anything like that. They tore us to pieces, put us through hell, he says.

The speaker is also critical of the Russian governments response to the incident, saying, They beat our asses like we were little pieces of ****...but our ****ing government will go in reverse now, and nobody will respond or anything and nobody will punish anyone for this.

My guys just called me, they are sitting there drinking, many are MIA, its a total ****up, another humiliation.... Nobody gives a **** about us.

In a second clip, a man explains that the battle quickly descended into a massacre as the Russians lost all armored support. Out of all vehicles only one tank survived and one BRDM (Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle) after the attack, all other BRDMs and tanks were destroyed in the first minutes of the fight, right away.
