Poll of the Day > Darn it. Every time. Why do I have to double and triple check the door lock?

I know I locked it. I locked it, and then unlocked it specifically so I could lock it again. And I did that two more times, but I still don't feel like I locked it. It doesn't even matter because the dogs will make a giant ruckus if someone so much as starts walking up the steps. And even if they don't, someone is going to be awake in an hour anyways and it'll take me at least that long to fall asleep.

SO WHY AM I SO PARANOID THAT I LEFT THE DOOR UNLOCKED?!

I feel like I'm slowly getting crazier every day. So frustrating to lock the door, settle into bed, and 5 minutes later have to get up and check the door lock. Ugh.

Of course, this only applies to me locking the door. Someone else forgetting to lock the door at night after letting the cats or dogs out? No problem. Mistakes happen and no one is going to break in anyways. But if I do it? No. I absolutely can't have that. Nope, nope, nope. Not. A. Chance.

In fact, if I don't need to even touch the door in the evening to morning hours, I can sleep completely peacefully knowing absolutely nothing is going to happen at all. But if I so much as get near that door, you better bet that I'm going to be running up and down the stairs for the next 10 minutes making sure that door is locked.

Well, it hurts, but I guess I'll go check the lock again before I go to bed...

Yeah, OCD has crossed my mind a few times and it honestly feels like it. The weird thing is though, this has only just developed a few weeks ago. So if I have it, either I've had it for a long time and it's finally decided to show itself now that I have something to obsess over or I've developed it because of something. :s

Checking two or three times is smart. I also check the kitchen two or three times before leaving the house. I have left the oven on in the past, and the coffeepot, it pays to check.

Flying, I follow the appropriate checklists. I guess if I made a checklist for the house, rather than relying on memory and not getting distracted, I'd only have to check things once.

OTOH, worrying about worrying about things is circular. Check, touch for tactile feedback, and go on.
