Is that supposed to keep it fresh or something? When I get a new deodorant, I keep that piece in there for a few uses, but eventually I get tired of dealing with it and throw it out

Yes.
Deodorant has a decent amount of various alcohols in it, which would evaporate away while its sitting on a shelf waiting to be purchased.

That makes sense, but are you supposed to keep it in there after you buy it? That part I was never really clear on...

Lets you know if some jackass used the deodorant off the store shelf and then put it back.

I always thought that it was there for transport purposes. Prevent shifting upwards while getting delivered.

Like the screen protectors that appear on phones out of the box are only there to prevent the phone from scratchs before the customers get it
