There's a lot of people who think that a third option "Have a line because we can't just let anyone in...oh but my neighbor skipped the line but they're so nice and sweet, you're meanies for yelling at them for skipping the line!" is a valid option. That's absurd.

There is, though, a pretty straightforward way to implement that: open up who's eligible for sponsorships.

That's still a kind of line, or rather a door people have to go through. If you implement that, you still need some kind of enforcement for people who skip THAT process. Else it's meaningless.

Until there's a hard reentry ban for someone who's been deported, why not allow the neighbors to sponsor someone coming back?

Overstays on the part of Indian tech workers makes up a pretty big chunk.

Why is that worth a spoiler tag, anyway?

Hell, quite a few don't even consider Puerto Ricans to be American, in spite of them being so for a little over a hundred years.

Yeah, sure, but what do you do about the people who aren't sponsored and come back anyway?

It is against the law to be sure. So by itself its not technically wrong to do. But I have to wonder if these folks also report any potential crime they see? Im guessing not.

If someone does that, because they believe in the rule of law so strongly that they will not let any crime or potential crime go unreported, then its not bad.

If however they do not report every crime or potential crime, then they clearly have some other agenda, and that makes it not okay.

Well no, "illegal alien" suggests that the person is illegal. But that's not the case. no law makes a person illegal. The things they are doing may be illegal, but the person is not themselves illegal.

Not having proper documentation for immigration is however illegal. The act is illegal, not the person. Thus, "Undocumented Immigrant" is correct, while "Illegal alien" makes no sense in English and should not be used.

Nothing about that would be "not ok". Certain crimes matter to people more than others, and there's typically more certainty involved when someone calls ICE in comparison to other crimes. You can't realistically call the cops for every potential crime because you'd have to call the cops every time you saw someone walking down the street. Having an agenda against certain crimes is perfectly reasonable as well, which is why we have campaigns against specific crimes such as rape or domestic violence. Illegal immigration is a huge problem in the US.

Illegal alien is a colloquialism. "Undocumented citizen" is a phrase pushed by those who benefit from illegal immigration to try and garner sympathy for criminals. Citizen is not an appropriate term for an illegal alien because citizens are legal residents by definition.

Decrying those who are against illegal immigration by calling them racist is one of the weakest shaming tactics in existence.
