Agonising over this because it's going to be a 2 year contract.

Takeaways so far

Google Pixel 2 XL
+ Really like the design
+ streamlined experience between phone and Google accounts
+ great camera
- who designs a phone with the best camera ever and the worst screen ever, lol

Samsung S9/S9+
+ Probably the best on paper overall
- Samsung app icons are hideous but I assume you can change the UI theme pretty easily
- some of the navigation/UX seems kinda shit compared to iPhones
- battery life seems very bad for a flagship phone

iPhone
+ Best UX experience so far
- Crazy expensive
- I just don't want to do this again, I'm bored and annoyed by them

Hauwei
+/- seems really good but...I dunno

Both the icons and UI can be changed depending on your preferences. You can always download apps to increase the amount of customization as well.

idk about the S9 but my S8 has great battery life.

i've heard good things about this.

look into other non-flagship models. you don't need to spend upwards of four figures to get good hardware if you're OK with not getting a 'name brand'

I can't comment on their phones specifically, but Huawei is a pretty sketchy company. I think they've been sued by both Cisco and T-Mobile in the past for stealing proprietary equipment and design specifications. But maybe their products are actually good nonetheless, idk.

there's a reason Google quit dealing with them. i love my Nexus 6P but it's most likely a matter of time before the battery issues brick mine.

Go with the S9.

I have the S8, Pixel 2 and iPhone 7. I also had the Pixel 2 XL for a bit.

I love the Pixel 2, probably because I got it like 3 days ago, but I would ultimately recommend Samsung phones. The S8 is still my powerhouse despite having almost identical shit in the Pixel 2.

The S9 is just a better S8. Also I'm gonna get the S9 as well as soon as they have that insane Costco deal for a S9 for $380 with a $200 gift card.

don't you wind up paying more that way than buying the phone unlocked and just adding it to an existing, 'discounted' contract

I thought all the major wireless carriers dropped the whole "2 year contract" thing? For my phone I made a down payment and am paying the rest off monthly, but I am not locked into a contract and can pay off the rest whenever I want to.

Yep, but you take a big initial hit as opposed to manageable monthly deductions.

Refurb is a good option though, I hadn't considered it that way.

If you don't mind the size, the Plus is the better option because of better battery and two cameras. I personally hate large phones.

It's just the XL. Read up on LG and their problems with their last several phones. They've been sued up the ass for it. The HTC Pixel 2 is pretty damn nice.

i think the iphone offers the best user experience and is the most consistent in all features (camera, battery life, etc). apps always look better on iphones, there are the most accessories for it, the apple stores are really convenient if you crack your phone and need the screen fixed, etc.

but on the other hand, android phones are more interesting and you can actually shop for a phone and pick one that offers the features you find most lucrative, rather than just getting the next iphone because you have no other choice.

imo i think it boils down to how you use your phone and what features you find are important. once you settle on ios or android, if you pick android imo it's a matter of just going to a store and playing with the phones there to see which one is more appealing to you.

I got a Galaxy S8 a few weeks ago because the S9 was coming out, therefore I could get the phone for free. A decided upgrade over my LG G4, and I like it so far. The rounded edges on the screen take some getting used to, and the phone feels _very_ uncomfortable to hold without a carrying case. Once I got the case, my experience with the phone improved.

I used iPhones exclusively for 9 damn years before switching to my Galaxy S8+ last November. It probably took me longer to transfer all my data than it did to get used to Android. Really, it's not that bad and it's SO much easier and convenient for me to use than my iPhones ever were.

My S8+ is still smooth as silk, as it should be. It has the features, build quality and design that I expect from a 2017 top level flagship. In this short time I've had it, I see no reason whatsoever to jump back to the Apple camp. I was reading earlier today that 80% of teenagers have iPhones - maybe that's why I outgrew them.
