Square pulled resources from its dev team in order to fund Final Fantasy 8, and a huge chunk of the latter part of Xenogears is just a slideshow with text. It's not just tht it's dialog/story heavy, but that a lot of what happens is literally told to you, and you have to read, in text, "then this happened, then that happened." It's confirmed that the reason they went with this narration approach was because they ran out of money. I did kinda like the first two or so of them, when it felt like they did it for artistic reasons.
