It's not an origin story, Samus has blown Ridley up about 3 times over prior to the clone showing up. But of course the idiot in charge didn't care, just like he didn't care that a grown woman should not be giving thumbs up and downs like a fucking toddler nor monotonously narrating out her feelings all the time. The dude completely ignored what made Samus herself in favor of his killbot that can't do anything unless her big strong father figure tells her to. Fuck Other M and Fuck Federation Force even harder.

I believe this was all done to make the game appeal more to Japanese players, since Japanese gamers tend to prefer those kind of women. In addition to the game's more linear and story-focused direction, it was done because the series has always been a bit of a low-seller in Japan while selling much better in the West.

But in doing so, they also alienated not only the few Japanese fans who did like the games, but the Western fans as well.

Nah. People blew the Adam thing way way WAY out of proportion.

It's clear that they just wanted a different answer to "why does Samus lose her powerups" than the usual "she never had any powerups shut up," or "she got in a fight and her suit exploded" and it wasn't meant to define her entire personality.

Plus, she's not happy about it from the start and goes along begrudgingly because Adam made her promise or else go home. And she eventually decides screw that and does whatever she wants anyway, when she had finally had enough.

The only time it's really a problem is when Anthony is getting attacked and she still waits for authorization to use the grapple.

I mean the game had problems, but that really wasn't one of them. How about tapping the control pad repeatedly making you pretty much invincible, or the fact that there are only three kinds of powerup that you find over and over, or the part where you don't get to actually pick up the authorized powerups in exploration? The stupid pixel hunts, holy crap the stupid pixel hunts, the total non-boss final boss--no no. Oh no. Nope nope nope. The big problem here, you know what it is? Do you know? Nope nope, none of that. The big problem is a few throwaway lines of dialog from the people who brought you the mushroom kingdom on the other side of your toilet.
